Honestly, what are my chances of getting into UNC - CH?

Hello, I was wondering what my chances are of getting into UNC as this is the school I really want to go to!

I am originally from NC (pay taxes there, so I am an instate application) however I live in Spain.
I play lacrosse at a national level, team winning the national championship of Spain.
played lacrosse at a international level and will be playing more tournaments.
Completed my ACT(only 1 so far, i’m going to do 3): 24 comp. score and 7 on the essay portion
Completed my SAT(only 1 so far, i’m going to do 3 as well): 1200 comp. score
Going on a two week survival trip to South America where I learn how to survive and then i’m left alone in the amazon
I speak 4 languages
I am currently dong the IB diploma
Work at a camp helping children for 2 summers in a row
CPR and AED certified
Partook in HMCE (Harvard Congress Model) + MUN (Model United Nations)
Helped raise donations for an orphanage in Africa
Coached lacrosse to younger children at a school every week.
Unfortunately I didn’t take JROTC (because I couldn’t) but I will take ROTC in University.
Became a co owner of a online business, creating my own brand.
Financial help will not be needed.

I am just really curious, from people who know better, what the likelihood of me getting into UNC is? Like percentage or something haha.

Thanks in advanced!

Look at the common data set: https://oira.unc.edu/files/2018/06/CDS_2017-2018_20180605.pdf

Your test scores are low for UNC and you dont mention your GPA. If you are a recruitable athlete though, that improves your odds. Have you talked ot the lacrosse coaches yet?

Hard to answer this question without knowing your GPA. I will say that if you qualify as being in state, you have a much better chance of getting in (there is a dramatic difference between the in state and out of state acceptance rate at UNC since over 80% of the slots are reserved for NC residents). Also, UNC has a big time lacrosse program. They won the national championship last year. You would have to be an exceptional player to get recruited there.

My GPA is around a 4.00, it’s a little tough to calculate it when you have just the IB diploma program. No I haven’t talked to the coaches, I am looking to focus on the schooling aspect and ROTC being as I want to make my military service a career.

My GPA is somewhere around a 4.00, it’s a little hard to calculate it when you are solely taking the IB diploma program. I do know that Universities prefer that program, however I don’t know how they calculate the GPA.

What are your IB predictions? that is more useful than trying to converrt

Those things will help your application

Your test scores put you in the bottom 5-10% of admitted students- and that includes the scores of recruited athletes.

Are you recruitable for lacrosse?

IB prediction are around 5,5,6,6,6,7.

I play for Barcelona Dracs, we won the national championship in Spain. Also I played for the Spanish National Team. I think I am recruitable, however I am trying to focus more on my academics and ROTC in University versus lacrosse.

Don’t underestimate the hook that lacrosse may give you. It could be what gets your application a second look.

agree with @momofsenior1: if you really want UNC-CH, lacrosse may well be the way you get in (esp if you don’t expect to get higher test scores)

It’s pretty difficult to give a meaningful probability of admissions in terms of a specific number. You have already been given the link to the Common Data Set; Part C7 of the CDS tells you that standardized test scores, application essay(s), letter(s) of recommendation, and the rigor of your high school record are “very important” academic factors considered for freshman admission, whereas GPA and class rank are “important” academic factors. Extracurricular activities, talent, and character/personal qualities are considered as “very important” non-academic factors.

Your lacrosse, as an EC, may indeed be your saving grace for admission; but it is more likely to help if you actually are recruited, with the lacrosse coaching staff going to bat for you. (No pun intended; can’t help the mixed metaphor.) As @momofsenior1 suggests, you need to be communicating with the Carolina lacrosse coaches about potential recruitment – it may be a little late in the game for that if you are a junior, but better late than never.

In addition to the above advice, don’t forget about LORs and essays; and, as others suggest, try to get those standardized test scores up as well.

I was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill for this fall but as a transfer student. Based on the information you provided, I think you have a great GPA as well as extracurricular activities for UNC.

When you complete the application, I’d recommend focusing a lot on your essays. In one of my essays, I discussed traveling and what I learned from other countries’ cultures - in part, I believe that is what got me in. You definitely have done a lot of traveling so that might help as well.

Try to focus more on your test scores… I’d recommend trying to reach at least 1300 on the SAT. It is doable, if you have time. My SAT score increased by nearly 200 in less than two years, and I barely studied. I just did some practice tests before my exams.

In the worst case scenario, maybe consider applying to UNC as a transfer student? Transfer students with over 60 credits are not required to submit their test scores. You would just need to do 2 years at another school… My friend and I went to a Florida community college, and we both got into UNC afterwards.

Good luck! Hope it works out for you!

Thank you for the advice, as well as everyone else. It was really helpful. I hope it works out too!

If OP is a junior, it’s probably too late to get recruited for lacrosse. Lacrosse recruits commit to schools early in their junior year of HS. UNC already has 11 commitments for the class entering in 2019. Six of those kids are top 100 prospects and all of them come from top HS programs (Hill Academy, Calvert Hall, Malvern Prep etc …). Maybe OP could try to walk on, but that won’t help him get into UNC. Bottom line, OP’s lacrosse background is a decent EC, but not a hook.

That said, OP, make sure you qualify as in-state, get your test score up a little, and you should be able to get into UNC.

UNC CH in state admissions tends to recently be geared towards more rural areas of NC. They’re in state acceptance rate can be as low as 30% in some areas but as high as 50% in others. The only thing I would do is try to move the SAT up to the 1300-1350 range. Good luck!
