I was wondering how much of an impact International Honor Societies have on your chances at admissions? I received an invitation from one at my school, but it seems as if they aren't very selective (Min. 3.5 GPA, 12 units completed). Thoughts?

the only point in joining them is that u can help organize events and stuff with them and put that on ur app. they also give out scholarships. but other than that, being in “honor” societies isn’t really much of an honor. u just sign up, pay ur dues, and that’s basically it

^
Did you join any, kobe? How was it?

nah. u know how it is. i’m too good for that shi t. everyone be asking fo my autographs if i joined those losers

…no i’m serious kobe. Did Michael reject your app or what?

Yeah, I received an e-mail today as well to join Phi Theta Kappa. I’m not sure if I’m going to join, but I don’t really foresee any negative aspect of doing so. I guess if, on March 8, or whenever the induction orientation at my CCC is, I’m not busy and feel like going, I’ll do that.

^
In my cc, we don’t get invites. We email if we wanna join. Yeah, that’s how inactive the honors society in my CC is. IDK what to do.

waste of time

Did you get a 3.5 though?
My school gives it for a minimum similar to yours, but “I earned the honors society award by completing 21 units with a 4.0 grade average”. I put Deans Honors Society on my app and said(^) what grades earned it for me in the description.

im about to go to the Rho alpha mu [alpha gamma sigma] meeting and join that shizz again. -__- pretty much as stated above you get access to some exclusive scholarships and you get a lame EC lol.

i agree it’s a waste of time. i was treasurer for my honor society, phi theta kappa, and it was it was a huge waste of time.

^ What did you do as treasurer?

@james
and is your CC’s PTK active?

yeah what the hell is honors society?

i have one at my community college and they have the same prereqs (3.5GPA, 12 units min.)

i joined mine and got an officer position a couple of weeks later…it does seem to add to a resume, especially after having handled your own projects, and it would be great to become a regional officer as well (for all of california and nevada, not too much competition with only 1 person running for most of the board positions) though unfortunately you have to commit to staying for a year which a one-yr transfer can’t do…even if the odds are that they’ll stay at a jc next year

Well treasurer does what it’s stated to do: have control over the money. I collected money from new members and money during fundraising events.

Yes, my chapter was active. We had a little over 300 people joined last semester.

^
Wow. 300 new members, and my CC has 12 active members. What makes the honor society so unworth it?

ahah my Hsociety has like <20.

i think it’s worth it for mentioning on a job resume or maybe to brag about versus other people. you do have to put some time in and you can sort of meet some people. albeit my cc sucks.

If you plan on getting your AA or walking during graduation you get a special string hanging from your hat and a little honors society tag on your diploma or something.

Even if your transferring you might as well get your AA if you have the classes, it can help you get an internship or job while working to get your BS/BA.

I joined AGS for the hell of it.They tried to get too involved in the student government taking positions that were opposite to my own. So, because of that, being a senator, I fought hard to make sure they didn’t get their way. lol. I even helped their rival group PTK get charter at our school. I would do my work in senate, clearly undermining their position, then see them later that day at the AGS honor meetings. It was hilarious how I created this awkward tension without ever addressing it with the AGS president, who by the way didn’t have the guts to say anything to me. I created this whole drama, this novella of political theater, and took joy in how serious people got over it. Still, I put them on my application, and paid my dues.
