So I'm looking to apply for the Arts and Science scholarship for biology and biomedical studies. For the essay, you have to talk about a research topic that you've either done or is interested in doing.

The thing is, I've tried ever so desperately to get myself an intership at a few of the labs around here that I was interested in, with no success. I have done a small project myself at a lab, but nothing impressive at all. Does anyone know if my chances for being selected are hurt if I've never participated in any real research?

Well, it might be something you'll have to compensate for. Then again, don't sweat it. Those applications aren't due until January somethingth, right? You have like half a year to do some sort of research, and something self-designed and self-guided might actually look more impressive than an internship.

Thanks. Although I most likely won't be doing any more research, I can find something interesting to write about...I think. Or maybe my grades alone will get me consideration! Um, or not.

My D had no internships, only the research she did for her IB classes. Really consider the possibilities of extending one of your class assignments. Write about the factors to consider in doing further research, the challenges and what you must overcome. I agree with Mel, self designed and guided is really more impressive. My guess is that the non-science scholarships may have fewer applicants because WU is such a draw for science folks. You don't need to major in the area in which you might get the scholarship. Good luck.
