So, guys, I'm going to Georgia Tech in the fall, and they were kind enough to let me know that I got a five on the Calc BC exam, and they have invited me to apply for the special Honors Calc II class for my first semester at Tech. Knowing that I am possibly considering being a math major but have to keep a B average in college to keep my scholarships, what would y'all suggest I do?
Thanks! I appreciate all of your advice!

i've often heard that you should play it safe with math in college. you could probably do the honors calc II work, but it might be extremely stressful freshman year.

I would suggest never taking AP credit for courses in your major - definitely start over with calc I - because the curve in calc is so easy.

If you actually love math then you should challenge yourself at a comfortable level. However, there is no reason to take something you are just going to trash your GPA with. You have to decide based on your own self perceived ability and work ethic.

For the math major you will want a strong foundation, and for that you might want to retake the introductory calculus courses.

im sure your background is fine if you got a 5 lol
i personally took dual enrollment classes to get past calc instead of the ap test, and apparently everyone fails calc 2 at uva so i guess i made the right move!! you should really check w people at ga tech (ratemyprofessors.com, or something similar) to see how hard the course actually is - you dont wanna lose your scholarship. then again you dont wanna make the math dept look down on you if youre considering majoring. its all a balancing act. good luck!!

GT is known to have tough core calculus classes, but you attend university to be challenged, not to have it easy.

Go for Honors Cal II!

I say go for it. Retaking math all the way from calculus I would be absolutely ridiculous, especially if you got a 5 on calculus BC. Use your credit to your advantage!

Thanks for all of the responses!

I was looking at the required courses for being a math major, and I'm going to be taking a LOT of math. (Well, duh.)

I know that I am going to take the credit for Calculus I, just because I'd love to go ahead and move on to Calc II. I am going to do some hard thinking on taking the honors course, but I am starting to lean towards just taking regular Calculus II. I can always apply for honors classes later if I want, but I'm still not necessarily sure.

I'd love to hear more from you all!
