Honors College

My son was accepted into the Honors College, and so I would love some feedback on the honors experience at WVU. He is trying to decide between three schools and WVU is the closest and least expensive.

Good question. Because I am an alumnus and WVU is also least expensive, I really want to give you a positive answer. However this is not the case. The honors program (HP) has been nothing but a disappointment to us. My son chose WV, among other reasons, because he thought the HP would make the large university feel much smaller. Not the case. I have received many calls whereby he has no idea whom to contact. They are disorganized to say the least. If a parent calls to help, they don’t want to talk with you. Not very satisfying whenever I’m paying for this education and they don’t want to hear my concerns. Please note that the HP places your child in ONE honors class per semester. The remaining classes will be with the remainder of campus. In one of his math classes, the instructor came in first day (could barely speak English) and announced that he was not a math professor by degree, and that he only found out two days ago that he was teaching the class.

My other child chose a small liberal arts school. Night & day! You get what you pay for.

WVRunner,
Thanks so much for your input. We originally were led to believe that honors was a separate small college too. I just don’t like the school for my son.
