I was wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages to joining an honors college are?

Not sure of any disadvantages unless you are desparate to live with non-honors friends (even that is possible in honors but not likely). And the application is the worst my girls did in terms of time!

Great housing, extra advisement help, small classes when honors sections. All honors get some type of scholarship, some include instate tuition rates (or some reduction) for OOS students making it a bargain. All types of students…D2 is self described geek, but includes athletes, greeks, student government, partiers…so you get the same cross section of students maybe just a little more focussed on academics. Know of at least one of D2 friends who is in IBCE program, so if that’s an interest maybe Honors people could find a current student for you to talk to.

I definitely agree with the above post! I really see few, if any disadvantages to being in the Honors College.

Advantages:

The dorm. It is EASILY the nicest dorm on campus. The only one that is anything like it is Patterson, which is an all girls dorm. We have a dining hall on our first floor which is really good and convenient. Our rooms are massive - mine is around 240 sq. feet. I think the average is 200 sq. feet here which is still huge in comparison to most dorms. We have indoor bike racks, a full game room, full kitchen, and nice laundry room. We also have MULTIPLE study rooms on every hall. They are really nice rooms that you can get away in to do your homework. Finally, we have no visitation policy. Possibly the best perk. We can have any gender and any number of people in here at any hour of the night without signing them in. It is like a high security prison at any other dorm. When I’ve been to the all girls dorms at night, they have to do numerous checks and then kick us out at 2am.

The classes. We are given a huge slew of “honors” sections of every basic class as well as very creative classes. Check out the course listing under schc.sc.edu – they have very unique classes. There are some on Bob Dylan, Evolution and Christianity, Psychology of Suicide, etc. On top of this, all the average classes are usually capped between 15-20 students. My Psych 101 class only has 20 students. Totally awesome!

Other Perks. As an Honors student, you get automatic entry into the International Business program (#1 in the country). Most Business majors have to do a rigorous application to get in after 2 years. We also get priority on most things on campus - housing, class selection study abroad scholarships, etc.

As stated above, the other students in this dorm are very diverse. You get the very studious kids who never leave the study rooms, the athletes who you’d never guess were in honors, the partiers, the nerds, the shy ones, the outgoing ones, etc. In general, everyone here is VERY friendly though.

Disadvantages:

The only “bad” thing I can think of is the Senior Thesis. As an Honors student, we are required to spend our entire Senior year working on a massive Senior Thesis to graduate from the Honors College. It can be on anything though – you could compose an album, write a book, do research, etc.

Definitely worth the stress of the massive application though! I highly recommend this place.
