Honors Course selection

Do students admitted to the Honors College get priority in selecting courses?

No, they don’t.

The only “perk” is the honors housing.

There are other perks too.

Like what?

Did they add something new exclusively for the Honors students??

Last year my son was able to register on Honors Day (which was early). Not sure if they are offering that again for incoming freshmen

I’m told that there are also honors events too, but I don’t know much about that because my daughter didn’t participate. And the greatest perk is to be able to take honors classes.

Some honors students are offered advising through the honors college–not just Chancellor’s Scholars. They also offer some programs that are tied to the BPhil; the one that comes to mind is a BPhil in global studies, but I know there are others as well.

Non-honor students are able to take honor courses – they just have to get permission – has that changed?

Anyone can still take honors courses with permission, MTnest.

My understanding is that if you have a 3.25 GPA you can take honors courses without permission, even if you were not admitted into honors.

It depends on the class, 1dwn1togo. In the physics series last year, honors students had to get permission from Doc Stewart to take the next course in the series.

I’m not sure about the non honors students but the students in the honors dorms get a lot of invites to special info seminars geared toward advancing their involvement in scholarship opportunities and other honors activities.

Hi,

It’s important to remember that the Honors College is not a seperate school within Pitt. You don’t technically enroll into the Honors College. Rather, your experience in the Honors College is built by taking advantage of the courses and other options offered.

Additionally, any student has the opportunity to take honors courses (by obtaining a permission number if you are not designated as an honors student) as well as honors advising and Honors College sponsered organizations. It’s ultimately up to the student whether or not they decide to take advantage of all this. Even if you’re designated as an honors student, no one is going to require you to do anything. Students must seek it out!
