@whenyoubelieve …I remember in one of the threads, that an internship is required to get the ACES citation. Is that true? Also we attended the ACES presentation…A representative from Northorp Grumman was there and said they had certain number of internships open for the ACES students…do they include freshman too?Thank you!
@priya2015 Technically, no. The ACES citation just needs some form of “experiential learning.” Most people get an internship to fill this requirement, but you can also participate in research to fill the requirement. You don’t have to get the ACES citation within two years - you can get it at any time during your years at UMD, - so getting the experiential credit at some point shouldn’t be that big of a deal.
Yes, they include freshman! I know a ton of freshmen who have internships this summer with NG.
@whenyoubelieve …Thank you so much for the reply!Another question about ACES…I think they have graduated one class …any ideas about where any of the students have ended up…either graduate program wise or work? Its hard to find any data on it because its a new program. Is there any way to get stats on this?Thank you.
@priya2015 I know about 5 ACES alum. One works at Northrop, one for Parsons, two founded a consulting company together, and the other, I believe, works for Amazon. I have no idea about the others. If you look on the ACES website (https://aces.umd.edu/), there’s the stat that 78% of the graduating ACES class had accepted full time offers and 95%+ of ACES alum are in graduate school/fully employed upon graduation. Also, if you look on the facts and figures page (https://aces.umd.edu/facts-and-figures), there’s more details about that.
Thank you! @whenyoubelieve
Regarding your #4 question:
A question along this topic - about the size of the UMD CS program - came up at an Admitted Student CS session: “is it true that seniors are having trouble getting classes that they need to graduate due to overcrowding?”
The reply was that some professors “had taken sabbaticals”.
@whenyoubelieve I was wondering do the honors dorm buildings have printers? My roommate and I are wondering if we should buy one, because the library is quite far from La Plata. Do you even need to print anything out or is everything submitted online?
*Or anybody else can answer; no pressure hahaha
@achillingchild No dorm has printers for student use, not even LLPs or Honors housing (at least for what I’ve seen and experienced). I’ve hardly had to print anything out. Most assignments ARE submitted online (like 98%). Even ENGL101 was a paper-free class and we were allowed to bring electronic drafts of our papers into class. The most printing I’ve had to do were for some personal forms I’ve had to fill out, resumes, and for COMM107 just because my teacher liked to have a hard copy of our speech outlines (and even then it was maybe like 6 sheets of paper total).
I’d say that a printer isn’t worth it, considering you might make a friend on your floor that wouldn’t mind printing something out for you (I’ve asked my friend on a few occasions to print stuff for me). Plus, you’ll probably have classes near/on McKeldin Mall, so you can always drop by the library when you’re near it for classes instead of walking from your dorm (it helps motivate you to finish work quicker, believe me).
BUT ! to each their own. This is just my experience and my two cents on the matter!!
