I, too, am curious as to Scholar's program scholarship potential.

Uhh stats and numbers aren't everything. And no offense Fengshui, but Gemstone= GROUP research and with that attitude, I am not getting the impression of you as a group member. Maybe you seemed a little cocky in your niche questions?

And mentioning it on every thread really isn't going to do much.

Oh gosh just because I for once wasn't as descriptive as I could have been you all jump to label me an egotistic loner.

Right I sounded cocky. Had that problem uh two years ago. Not now.

Right lindz, I'm here today because I lack the tact and common sense to put into my email something along the lines of "If I actually pick CP they're gonna have to put me into Gem" of course. Brilliant observation. There are other well-qualified students and ego aside I am telling you I'm certainly more qualified than some invited. Not arrogance. It's a fact. I'm sorry I'm not tiptoe-ing around and asking softball questions.

I know that I earned it. And it really is a slap on the face that I wasn't invited. After being courted and told by the Assistant Dean of Admissions that I should choose CP because of it's research connections with HHMI and NIH, after being told about the opportunities CP will give me for undergraduate research... that I wouldn't be invited? That's awfully polite.

"I don't blame them" Because you're able to make a snap judgement on a person from four bloody words. Brilliant observation bud.

And mellow don't give me that stats and numbers thing. First off, it's a state university so more often than not yeah they are.

Second, yeah I've got an attitude. Totally. Right now. 100%. I'll mention it to get some rational explanations / suggestions. No I didn't come off as cocky, I don't know how that could be possible really. Third, my essays and correspondance with people at CP and my meetings there all showed I'm anything but cocky and arrogant. I'm a goof and I love fun and they know it.

walks away

"Yeahh...

Oh and bud.

Numbers ain't everything."

**

You were right the first time. You may have very well deserved to be in Gemstone and not getting in may not have been fair, but life isn't fair. And it's not the end of the world! So deal.

What I find obnoxious = making a fuss of not getting into a program of a school that "you wouldn't go to" anyway

^hey, I think everyone's being a little harsh.

CP is a good school and it's a good cost. Maybe deep down he actually wants to go, if he will get the same opportunities. So it's fine to be kind of peeved if you want to go but now are in a boat where it's no longer a good option and someplace 40 grand a yr is going to be your only decent substitute.

I would be ****ed, too.

Now if you really have no interest in going there and just want some "recognition for your achievements", I'd get over it and fast...lol.

sorry to make you feel defensive, fengshui....... though it wasn't just me.
i think what mellow meant is that in determining who gets invited to extremely selective programs such as gemstone, they DEFINITELY look at more than just numbers. there are a smaller number of apps there, and they will take other things into consideration-- such as (for gemstone) group experience or potential to work well in a group.
not saying that you don't have it, maybe your app just didn't show it.

anyway, there are plenty of undergrad research opportunities besides gemstone, which i'm sure you're aware of since you have visited and talked to many people here. maybe the university has better things in store for you-- an internship as a freshman, or some one-on-one research with a professor that they've introduced you to?

Groovinhard got it pretty well when he talked about not having all the opportunities at CP. If it was merely to be able to say "i got into gemstone" then yes you all would have completely valid points and I'd feel like a jerk. But it really is an option for me. Honestly I have my heart set on Brown but if things don't pan out or the financial situation gets worse then I would go to CP. Either way it's higher on my list than a lot of other "better" schools. And to know that I am not maximizing the opportunities available here would be frustrating.

Lindz you could be right. Dr. Infantino talked about hooking me up with an internship as a freshman if I got bored with classes but I mean it was just one of those hypothetical things.

Sorry to get an attitude with everyone. Just ain't much of a fan of personal attacks.

I also apologize for being cocky myself. Anyway I wish you the best of luck and I'm sure that you'll be happy wherever you choose to go. And yup, there are tons of other possibilities (like internships).

Still seeking additional information about the Scholars program, I called the University this morning. I was specifically asking about the ability to take Honors version courses. I was told that the Honors students have priority in registering for Honors courses. Very often the Honors students don't fill the Honors classes. In that case, other students, including Scholars, can register for those open spaces. Scholars have no priority over anyone else in the student boyd in obtaining places in Honors classes. Assuming this information is correct, to me, that makes the Honors program much more desirable than the Scholars program.

I wouldn't assume all Blair magnet students want to be in Gemstone. It strikes me that Gemstone would appeal to certain kinds of kids and certain majors more so than others. Some are perfectly happy to be doing individual research projects through the Honors program and to be rid of those multidisciplinary group projects! ;)

I rec'd an official Gemstone invite in the mail today.

keep in mind gemstone will not be fun if u have a bad team with a project that u don't like for the entire 4 years.

chaoses - but you are allowed to drop gemstone and remain in honors, if i read correctly on the website.

can you be invited to gemstones, honors, etc only if you applied priority?

I have been selected as a semifinalist in umd Banneker/Key Sholarship any thoughts for the interview ?

Congrats, whyivy! How did you find out your were a semifinalist? Did they give you any info on what to expect in the interview?

D got the Gemstone mailing today, it says they expect to enroll 200 freshman Gemstones and 850 honors. If they offer 290 Banneker/Key's, it would seem that the Gemstones have a huge leg up. Maybe I'm missing something though, perhaps those honors humanities types? Probably a huge number go to uninvited (honors, gemstone) URM's? Anybody know? You would think they would all go to the best/brightest though.

sjacobsen - no, you do not have to apply priority. my friend applied over winter break and got into honors.

whyivy - did you get an email or something in the mail?

astrophysics mom Thank you. i got a letter and an invitation card from md about the interview and luncheon on march 14 and a contact information to ask about the interview. But it clearly said that if I dont get the Banneker/Key scholarship I automatically get the next highest scholarship!!What ever that might be!!

Mello A letter on the mail
