Honors Program Invitations 2012-2013

DD just informed me she received an email that she has been invited into Gemstone.

My son received his invitation to Gemstone yesterday as well.

Got my invitation to Humanities yesterday :)

Got my invitation to the DCC and happy I got into the Honors College that I wanted but with no merit aid, I’m pretty bummed out :(

got invitation to gemstones today

got invitation to ils

congrats to everyone who got in!

University Honors. I wanted ILS but I AM grateful regardless lol.

@neuroscience, University Honors is my LLC. I did it because I am studying Music/Piano, Chemistry, and I’m pre-med. UH gives you the flexibility to create your own custom program. You will be free to do exactly what YOU want to do. :)

Is Gemstone difficult/too time consuming if you are pre-med? My daughter is going the pre-med route. I know she can change to University Honors at any time, but they prefer that that move to occur before the teams are formed.

@MDdad2012,

That will depend on your Ds major. Many science majors, popular with pre-meds, will include many if not all of the pre-med requirements so there will be no extra work. If you don’t have this overlap, then you might have to give up a minor you wanted to take, but I’ve known many Gemstone people who have done double majors AND a minor while still doing a great job on their project. It’s all up to the student. Some of us are just gluttons for punishment.

Officially University Honors  It was my first choice because I love the flexibility.

@Plumazul, yeah thanks. I actually really like University Honors now because of the flexibility.

Gemstone teams aren’t formed til the end of year 1. Gemstone has a high drop out rate, so they’re prepared if you decide its not for you. Most of the drops are in the first or second semester.

Also, Gemstone is made up almost entirely of science (bio, chem, etc.) or engineering majors.

i heard GEMS104, the 3 credit class is really bad and a lot of people drop out becuase of it!

Were you notified of your program by email? Where else could I see it?

got mine my email and they said they would be notifying me by mail soon

@yodelo. Considering that 66% of students get an A and 32% get a B in GEMS104, I don’t see how it could be all that bad. (According to OurUMD)

I think he may mean that the course is unenjoyable, not difficult. I’ve heard that some Gemstone kids love the program and others hate all of the classes. Which makes me very concerned because I got accepted to Gemstone, but I’m not sure if I’d enjoy it as much as University Honors.
