One of my main concerns about Cal Poly is the inability to register for classes needed to graduate, due to budget cuts etc.

Do students in the honors program have a special advantage when it comes to registering for classes? How difficult is it to manage honors courses as an engineering major?

I’m not sure how the honors program works. My son was e-mailed over the summer by the professors offering him enrollment in their classes. I remember the e-mails said these classes were by invitation only and they didn’t count anymore than the regular class. I also remember that he only had few days to respond. He turned them both down because of time conflicts.

Honors Program Students have no priority in Registration for classes. And the Honors Classes dont count for any more GPA points than regular classes. Not much “Honor” there. And a lot of the classes required are rather 'touchy-feely" - quasi “Leadership” classes. And some of the other classes like Honors Calculus are obviously quite difficult…but even if you get an “A”… it doesnt get you any more points towards your GPA. But your transcript does show it as “Honors Calculus”

The Honors Program isnt worth the effort in my opinion. Just stay with the regular program and get good grades.

It doesn’t seem like they have a lot to offer in their honor program. Are a lot of the honor classes that hard. Do the honor students get to be in smaller classes?? I don’t see why anyone would want to join…

The Honors classes I was in were generally smaller than non-honors. The Honors classes like Honors Calculus were TOUGH ! I took 2 semesters of AP Calculus in High School and got “A’s” I felt lucky to get a C+ in 2 Honors Calculus terms at CalPoly. And it counted not one bit more towards my GPA. Go figure !

Some of the other Honors classes had vague titles like “leadership” etc. I dropped the Honors Program after 1 year. Wasnt worth it to me. And they didnt like my C+ grades in the Calculus classes so I told them “No Thanks” since I didnt think it was worth the extra effort.

Maybe I am not smart enough or didnt work hard enough. The Honors Program obviously works well for some people.
