Hook

Are a cluster of language awards/achievements a hook? Or are they just nice achievements?

For example:
- took French II at the high school while in 8th grade, finished sequence with AP Fr Lang JR year (5 on AP exam)
-taking AP Fr Lit, a 2-yr course of study, as an independent study (not normally offered)
-Placed 4th, 2nd, and 1st in state on Grand Concours in successive years, also nationally ranked all years
- Won Langenscheidt French Award (one student per state)
- skipped Spanish 1 entirely and started with II
- Placed 2nd and 1st in state on National Spanish exam in successive years
- Taking AP Spanish senior year
- 3 wks volunteering in Latin American country one summer
- Inducted into both French and Spanish Honor Societies (only one in school)
- Jr year placed first in state in both French and Spanish

It is a nice achievement, certainly, but not a hook. You will find that many students applying to top schools have similiar involvement and achievements, so it really depends on where you are applying.

Hook is something that will guarantee admissions to some colleges.
Like summer at RSI is a guarantee admission to MIT/CalTech.
