I live in PA and we have those types of 'overcast cold winters.' Apparently we're known for relatively icky weather?

I'm applying to one school warmer (only in DC though, so still not too warm), but the rest are colder... I don't really love the cold, but all the schools I ended up liking seemed to be in New York. If I end up going to one of the colder ones, I'm going to buy a ton of long underwear and get myself a better jacket (the one I have now looks good but it isn't very warm).

LONG UNDERWEAR is amazing. You wear it under your normal clothes and it is fuzzy and warm and lovely.

Anywho, weather/location wasn't a huge issue for me- I'd like a warmer school, maybe, but I have a love for northeast LACs.

If you really want variety, go to a school in RI. I'm tellin ya, we have the most random weather ever. In January, it was in the single digit temps for one week, and the next week it was in the 60s, and that weekend, there were thunderstorms/downpours, and by Monday we had a blizzard. Can't get anymore random than that ;)

id say be careful about weather, because some people are really senstitive to cold (like myself). growing up in arizona, im spoiled and i cant even handle the slightest bit of cold weather so i stuck to CA, TN, TX, and FL for my applications....
no amazing east coast schools for me :(

I'm from Miami and I attend school in Chicago. I love the cold weather! I thought I'd freak out about the climate change but it actually adds a lot more variety with clothing and activities.

Pennsylvania can't be as cold as it is in the New England---I highly doubt you'd die ;) If I were you, I'd bring regular clothes + jeans, sweats, hoodies, and a coat. But don't forget to bring along shorts/tees too, for spring/summer.

I'm from PA and I second what kjcastillo1990 said.

T-shirts, JEANS, hoodies, and a good winter coat- something with down/artificial down in it.

If you want to go out and play in the snow, then also gloves, hat, long underwear, boots... But that's a lot of stuff that you can buy once here, too.

Shorts are more for summer, and slippers probably wouldn't be good when it snows, but I know plenty of people you still wear flipflops in January in PA, so maybe you'll be okay.

I haven't read the whole thread so someone might have mentioned this, but watch out for SAD. Some people move from sunny, warm climates to dark, chilly places and experience pretty bad depression. I've lived in Maine all my life and the winters are still tough at times. The cold never lets up and snowball fights get old after age 12.

I moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to the University of Alaska Fairbanks - which proudly describes itself as America's arctic university. We're at 64 degrees north latitude - about 130 miles south of the Arctic Circle. When I arrived here in late January for the start of classes, we got about six hours of daylight.

The temperature dropped to 40 below zero two weeks ago, and right now it's a balmy 15 degrees above.
