Does anyone have a great suggestion for where to stay for a visit to Oberlin? Tripadvisor is no help. Is it better to stay in Cleveland? Any suggestions most welcome. Thanks!

if you like B&b’s; hallauer house right in Oberlin. Also see if Ivy Tree BandB is available, also right in Oberlin.

The Oberlin Inn is okay in that it’s literally right on campus, so once you park there you can walk everywhere for your visit. Some feel it’s a bit overpriced for what you get (in terms of bedding, lobby, etc.) but there’s nothing wrong with it; it’s just a bit prosaic.

I don’t see why you’d stay in Cleveland; it’s far. If you cant find lodging right in Oberlin, consider Elyria which is a bit seedy as an industrial town, but has a range of motel rooms and is closer than Cleveland. Just don’t judge Oberlin by Elyria; not really relevant to college life. Just wake up, get in the car and drive right to Oberlin, even for breakfast, rather than hang out in Elyria.

The advantage of staying in Cleveland includes seeing the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, but if your focus is Oberlin, try to stay in Oberlin (at a B & B or the Oberlin Inn) or 2nd choice: an Elyria motel but don’t hang in Elyria.

My son just graduated from Oberlin and we always stayed in Elyria whenever we went there. There are quite a number of chain hotels there and it is only a 15-20 minute drive to Oberlin. The above poster is correct, Elyria is a tad seedy, but it is a convenient and affordable place to stay.

We stayed at the Hallauer House, which is a few minutes out of town. Nice drive through corn fields, a left onto a dirt road, and then the inn is a nice white clapboard house in a stand of trees. Very nice place. Civil War theme. One of the owners knows a lot about history.

Another time, we availed ourselves of some of the very affordable houses in town that are sponsored by and benefit churches. One with an older couple who frequently also host foreign students, and another small house inhabited by a nice gentleman, who rents out a couple of room that are very nice. He also has a very nice porch to sit on to enjoy Oberlin evenings on.

Access to these is somewhere on the Oberlin site.

North Olmsted is a typical nice suburb on the west side of Cleveland. If you are also going to be spending any time in Cleveland, the North Olmsted area would work well. It’s just under 20 miles from the North Olmsted La Quinta (an example chosen for no reason - it popped up in Google) to Oberlin college or from that suburban hotel to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Downtown Cleveland.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I forgot all about the other forums, and now I’ve got my work cut out for me!

Are you coming soon? It’s a sad day in Cleveland today.

If you are choosing to go the Elyria route…Priceline 2.5 stars has the Holiday Inn in Elyria. Over the past 2-3 years we’ve been successful bidding $37-45. Elyria is not a scenic town, and the Holiday Inn is not the Ritz, but it is convenient to Oberlin and the price is right!
