I think that building was considered by Disney for the next version of the movie of Rapunzel. It’s definitely “one-of-a-kind.”
That makes much more sense!
Still wouldn’t want to get married in a castle. To each their own!
Wow—maintaining, cleaning, heating and cooling these huge places is exhausting to contemplate (and costly).
This is the house that the UCSD chancellor lives in. It was seriously renovated a few years ago and I believe Audrey Geisel (Dr. Suess’ widow) donated money to help with the renovation.
I always tell H when we walk by this house that if we won the $500 million lottery this is the house I want to buy. It is about a mile and a half from our house on the cliffs above Black’s Beach. There are many larger homes in this neighborhood of La Jolla (the Farms) including the Razor House that Alicia Keys owns, but I have always loved this place.
I’ll take the Chancellor’s house over the Razor house! Razor house is impressive, but that glass, it’ll rarely look like in the photos with the salt air. Showy and dramatic, but the Chancellor House looks comfortable.
Both houses are beautiful, but very different. I just have a soft spot for the Chancellor’s house.
Chancellor house is just a beautiful example of California Spanish. I love it
Those are both beautiful homes and great architecture. Love the look of the Razor House but as someone who is uncomfortable with uncovered windows at night, probably couldn’t live there.
This house is very much my wished for style:
@BunsenBurner - would this wine cellar work for you?
Though neither the UCSD or Razor house is really my preferred style, I’d surely live (or vacation) in either with a happy heart. The Lomaland on is quite lovely, my favorite of the three.
As the OP of this thread I’m LOL’ing at the original point of the thread “good, bad and ugly” and now we are looking at $11M homes!
I’m
Fine with it totally but what a change!
That Loma house feels out of place from the more typical CA home? I feel Iike it’s a blend of mountain + craftsman + something else that’s lots of wood! While I enjoy wood floors and some supporting wood it’s too much wood for me.
That is a great house. However, hard to say what the wine room looks like IRL from the photo.
Love the Loma house except that creepy wine cave. Not that fond of the Razor or the other one.
It’s part of the good! As we’ve seen, there can be ugly $11 million houses too. I think the Lomaland house reflects the Prairie Style more than anything. Not sure what would be considered California style - stucco? Mission? Mid century modern? Beach house? I’ve seen plenty of houses that would be right at home on Nantucket and others that could be on a mountainside in Colorado. And that’s just on the greater San Diego area…l
I love looking at houses. Keep 'em coming!
@Nrdsb4 I’m with you. I love looking at all the houses!
Here in my Silicon Valley neighborhood, the new houses being built are of many varieties.
I like the Loma home for $11MM. The other two not so much.
I walk my dog past a really beautifully remodeled rancher and I kept wanting to talk to the owner about the exterior color they used.
I finally saw the husband who gave me the color chip. He said his wife grew up on the East Coast and wanted that Boston or Nantucket feel. The color is Newburyport Blue. I’m going to paint our home that color with white trim.
That is a very nice color.
It’s actually kind of fun to look at houses WAY beyond our means that have things we don’t like (beyond the normal concerns of cleaning and maintaining a humongous house).
I hopes it’s not cheating to include an international property, but we have recently been browsing homes in France ahead of a possible move next year. Here’s one my daughter particularly liked - not in our budget or in the part of France we’re interested in, but what the heck. Goes with the castle theme, but I particularly liked the children’s playset in the front yard. Luxury homes for sale in Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France | JamesEdition
