That’s an odd one! One picture “cool”, the next picture “ugh!” All that house and ALL that red carpet! And that swampy yard is a mystery!
Moats, moats… natural ones!
This was probably a high end AirBNB or something like that…
Check out the small army of semi-dead orchids near the bathtub.
I really really like the leaded windows.
Complete with a dragon that library though
I like it. You need to replace all the red carpet and get rid of the medieval decorations but after that it’s actually a pretty cool place.
Personally, I think it’s neat, and if the red carpet, et al, is still functional I wouldn’t replace it.
But we’d never spend that much on a house TBH. It also doesn’t have as nice a pond or views as we have here on our farm.
We once looked at house that had white carpet in a guest bathroom even around toilet; carpet included yellow pee stains.
Ok, that’s not functional…
I wonder who would list a place without that having been torn out? Or was it a foreclosure or some sort of estate sale where they estate had no money?
If you would prefer a more tasteful castle with a view:

Value has doubled since it sold for $5.4 million in 2018.
No dragons, baby or otherwise, but it does have a putting green…
Don’t know if foreclosure/estate sale, we just left. This was over 15 years ago at the height of the then real estate frenzy.
I just came across
If someone would put a fire gutted house on market for 399k, I suspect some pee in carpet wouldn’t deter someone from listing in a hot real estate market.
Well, if we’re posting fire damaged houses, here’s one that sold for $1,372,500 in Santa Cruz, one block from the beach though. It never made the news, since it’s pretty “ho hum” for around the SF Bay Area.

I saw the Zillow listing for the fire damaged house in Melrose, MA, which billed itself as “3 bedrooms, 2 baths…”
Because of our looking, the castle in Monroe is now a “hot home” on Redfin! This is a very rural area… that asking price is way above average for the area. Would be curious what it sells for…
The Redfin home value estimate changed from $8.4m at tie of sale in 2018 to $11.4m today, for a 36% increase. Zillow’s estimate is far lower and closer to the actual 2018 sale price, so it may be more realistic. Zillow’s current estimate is $7.0m or ~40% below Redfin.
I live in the general area and my home has the same pattern of increase since 2018. My Redfin estimate increased also increased by ~40% since 2018, with the bulk of the increase occurring since COVID. With spending more time at home and more remote work, many people want to upgrade homes and/or venture further from office building, contributing the rapid increase in prices. However, my Redfin estimate is approximately the same as my Zillow estimate. There is not such a huge discrepancy, between Redfin and Zillow like occurs for the castle home. I expect it is difficult to estimate the price of such a unique home, as there are few recent sales in the neighborhood, and those sales are not comparable to the home.
As far as the home itself, I like the style. I wouldn’t want to deal with the grounds maintenance, but I’d be happy to work on the theater.
The market in our new area has been so hot that almost anything will sell within the first week if the price is at all reasonable. A few sellers got greedy after seeing houses close above list price and over priced their own houses. Those sat until the prices were adjusted. Things slowed once school started, but I expect activity will boom again in the spring since there are several new employers opening nearby.
Oh, my. That doesn’t fit the Monroe I know!
In case you need a laugh, look up @desipbhm’s TikTok of this house.

This is an interesting choice of a cover photo for a listing… what is going on there?!
