House Hunting - the good, bad and exceptionally ugly!

Many of you seem familiar with Redfin. I’ve heard of it but it’s not a go-to here. Two go-to’s are realtor.com and Zillow

Both Zillow and Redfin are our local startups! Headquartered in Seattle. Redfin sells quite a few listings in our area. I find their website easier to navigate.

I prefer Redfin to Zillow and realtor.com due to the combination of interface and features. However, it’s largely a matter of personal preference. One key downside of Redfin is they only provide information for a limited section of the United States… .generally areas for which they have sponsored realtors. In contrast, Zillow and realtor.com provide information on homes throughout the United States. When I last bought a home, my realtor let me use his interface, which I found to be superior to all of the above, with more information about homes and more features.

How about this house in Newton, near Boston?

That was already posted, in Post #117.

I actually think it’s kind of cute.

My bad.

The price is wild, but I also thought the Newton bungelow is cute. Trying to figure how much hub and I can downsize for next place. This is probably a bit too ‘down’ tho!

Not necessarily a bad house… just very unusual. I suppose the 7,000 sft would make a great indoor playground in dark, rainy PNW winters. The floor plan looks like a maze.

Beautiful setting but “lovingly maintained by original owners” = “nothing updated since originally built”.
It would take a lot of work to make that work for most families. Starting with ripping out the carpet in the kid’s bathroom!

Perhaps designed by someone who spent their youth exploring undergrounds with Mario et al. I’m surprised there isn’t a tube somewhere!

My kids work in Mountain View/Sunnyvale CA. Their search for a house keeps going further out. What they are paying would give them a most wonderful house in most parts of the country.

Would love a place like that close to my D and SIL In Boston, but that is over the top price wise.

With the amount HCOL folks pay for housing, we can get a whole lot of travel in.

It’s definitely a plus for us that neither H nor I (nor any of our kids) desire to live in HCOL areas! Our wandering addiction would take quite a negative hit.

@Marilyn looks like this might be somewhere close to your neck of the woods - ? Looks like a @coralbrook ’s next project! :joy:

Oh, we drive by this all the time when we swing by Sunset Cliffs on a long cut home from Ocean Beach. Closer to @coralbrook than me. I think of it as the Dr Suess house.

Seems like the owner who remodeled it was a fairly important glass artist who passed away this year

OMG. I was going to highlight one particular photo but then the next one was worse. And the one after that. Oh wow.

I think it’s a fun house! (Dr. Seuss was from La Jolla) It would make a great Airbnb.

It’s not that bad. Retile the bathroom and paint over the exterior checkerboard wall. And add a toe kick in the kitchen so nobody has to try to scrub underneath the kitchen cabinets!

IMO, it’s scraper. Start over.
