Housing at UMich

If a student recieves a financial aid package at UMich factoring in residential housing, but the student decides to live off-campus, can the money offered for housing in the FA package for on-campus housing be used for off-campus? How does financial aid and UMich work this with the student?

Your FA can be decreased, I think… The COA allowance for housing is less for commuting students, and I imagine that’s what you’d be considered if you moved off campus? When I commuted for home my COA was adjusted so I didn’t get what I would have if I’d lived on campus.

you were correct about if you live off-campus with a parent. I talked to fin aid and they said nothing changes though if you live off campus by yourself. glad to hear that. thanks for the reply

That’s really obnoxious. I paid rent and all of my expenses when I lived with my parents, I just didn’t have time to find an apartment. Figures.
