So students in Teter dorms were expected to completely box up all their belongings before Christmas break. This was so the mold remediation teams could treat the rooms while students were gone so as to minimize “disruption.” There are lots of stories and photos circulating that students are returning to find their rooms vandalized. Items are broken, mirrors broken, foot prints on boxes, wall items ripped off leaving damage to the wall, beds dismantled and tossed aside. It’s an unbelievable act of disrespect and unprofessionalism. If a student left that mess you better believe there would be fees and fines involved. If you are still thinking of giving IU the benefit of the doubt, then at least be warned that “FULLFILLING THE PROMISE & WE ARE IU” is a smokescreen. The assault on the mold impacted 2022 class is criminal and for those same students who already signed a contract for next year for campus housing got notified that their signed contract was voided. Yet if a student breaks a contract - $600 loss for them.
Indiana university is saying their dorms do not have to follow Indiana laws with regards to habitability.
What other housing options would you recommend if I do not get selected for the KLLC? I’m not familiar with the campus yet and I hope to be close to the B school. Thanks
As a freshman you will have classes all over campus not just Kelley. The housing crisis, mold and shortages going forward are going to impact housing in an unpredictable way next year and the year after. The only dorms close to Kelley are Wright which is really old and desperate need of update and no AC but central, Teter Quads -where 2 buildings are coming back online while 3 of the Teter buildings now with serious mold will likely be taken off line in May. No one knows if the two that have been offline have received any mold testing by an outside professional company so if you have underlying health issues, respiratory, allergy, immuno-compromised or just don’t want your health gambled with due to potential mold exposure find out the condition of buildings before selecting. We don’t want anyone to go through the ordeal we and many others have this year. Choosing a building in Southest is safest as most of those are somewhat newer or renovated in some way and nearest the best dining hall on campus. You will get the hang of the bus routes, when they are full, etc, grabbing a bike or a Lime scooter to get across campus. My daughter was in the KLLC in McNutt and due to mold she moved to the other side of campus and she just accommodates the extra time in her commute to Hodge. Briscoe has been popular - higher price tier but it will be kind of isolated next year with the closure of McNutt and Foster buildings. The KLLC will be in Eigenmann next year- a mid-low range price point normally with AC but the windows do not open in any room above the 3rd floor if that’s an issue for you. Read the housing contract thoroughly and understand what it does or does not guarantee and that the U can changed your housing assignment and doing so does not constitute a breach of contract. When it says preference, it means preference, they obviously cannot guarantee assignment locations for many reasons. Good luck!
