Housing in France?

I have a French student (student OF French) looking for housing in Marseilles. She will doing an internship, so low paid work. Got any ideas where she can look? AirBnB was too steep. Any reputable message boards of people looking for roommates or housesitters?

No idea myself, but you might try posting on the International Students forum. I once had a question if anyone knew of a hotel in Russia (industrial, not tourist, area) and someone on that forum had actually stayed there. So you never know!

I would check university bulletin boards, as they will often have apartment listings. Also, some cafes will have bulletin boards with listings. If she’s still a student, she can check with the local universities to see if she could live in a dorm, which tends to be very affordable. They will usually have a kitchen on the floor (and you can rent a fridge locker), and it can be a good way to meet other folks (as they’re cooking at the same time). Sometimes there will also be a cafeteria nearby. (By cafeteria, don’t think a plethora of options. Think school cafeteria with one or two options a day.)

Alternatively, if her college has an exchange program or any kind of relationship with a university there, they may have some contact info she can use, too (either for university dorms or for apartment listings).

Our younger kid had an offer for an unpaid internship in Geneva when she was a grad student. Talk about expensive! She reached out to her prospective boss and said that she couldn’t afford that… the boss was very understanding and found someone who’d be willing to house 2 US college students in their guest quarters… for free! so I recommend reaching out to the new colleagues. You ne er know.
