Housing Qs

Hi, I had some questions about housing for freshmen

First, how does the system work? I think it said lottery on the website but I wasn't sure if that was for upperclassmen or everyone. Is it first come first serve (will people who sent the forms in first have priority)? Or do they do it once the apps are all in at the end?

Also, I really wanted a modern double. I know most rooms are - is it very difficult to get one, though? Also, for the modern singles/triples, how does the setup work (in terms of bathrooms, and such)?

Thanks!

the real “lottery” that’s on the res-life website is technically just for upperclassmen, where you get assigned a lottery number and you can make petitions for particular suites.

technically though, freshmen housing is a bit of a lottery too… if you fill out your form in time for the deadline, you’ve done everything you can (there’s no “first-come-first-serve”), and after that it’s kind of chance as to how far down your preference list you’re assigned. If you’re wanting a modern double, your odds are actually really good. It’s not guaranteed, but there definitely are a lot of them. For modern triples & singles, i think it ends up being 2-6 suitemates sharing one bathroom? Something like that. Modern singles are pretty rare, or at least they were when I enrolled…

when’s the deadline for housing applications?

If you’re in incoming freshman, you don’t have to worry about the lottery.

A lot of kids get modern doubles and like them a lot. There are usually two rooms, each housing 2 students that share a restroom that includes a toilet, shower, and sinks.

For traditional, everyone in the hallway shares a shower/bathroom.

Traditionals are usually louder than moderns, but kids seem to bond more quickly.
