So...excuse the late posting. I HAVE been looking for summer programs for a few months now, but one way or another, things seemed to fall through. I was rejected from one summer journalism program and couldn't get my parents to complete the paperwork in time for another one. A third program, for which I won a scholarship, is still too expensive to attend with airfare, etc. Neither of my parents is working now, and so I am looking for suggestions on how a rising senior could make the most of her summer. I am a straight A student, really motivated and reponsible, and especially interested in journalism/writing or something with the environment or ecology. Every pre-college program I have looked at, even locally, is upward of $1,000, and most have already closed registration. I've also been looking for jobs, but they're few and far between for teens. I currently have an internship in my town, and will probably volunteer later in the summer. My family doesn't have a lot of money to spend on expensive programs, so if anyone else has been in this situation and has suggestions that would be awesome!

Your financial situation is the same as mine. Although I’m going to both of my summer programs on separated scholarships, the airfares are still heavy. Part of the scholarship covered the airfare, and my parents, who are currently not working, are forking out the rest. I regretted not writing a letter explaining my financial situation. Collegechica12, please write to the scholarship organization about your financial situation. I hope you’ll ellicit a good response.

Wow, way to describe everything that I am. Journalism and environmental science, poor parents, nothing to do…
I’m studying my ass off. There isn’t a fancy program that I can afford, and the best I can do is study O Chem and write a lot of articles. I’m hoping next year will allow for service opportunities, but right now, I’m just preparing for once I’m in college, and mentally preparing myself for starting my app in the fall.
Oh, and my app essay. Try to work on that early.

Internship and volunteering sounds good to me. If you like writing, do some writing stuff (e.g., start or join a blog). Or just read a lot of books. That’s a great way to spend a summer, IMO.
