How accepting is Waco and Baylor?

I heard some horror stories and wanted to hear from people’s experiences. I am an Indian male coming from the Bay Area, so can anyone talk about how it is coming from OOS?

Is Baylor your only option ? No reasonable person would describe Baylor or Waco, Texas as liberal. So I guess that it is safe to say that Baylor & Waco are a bit to the right of San Francisco.

I have to take exception to the above answer since you were not asking about how liberal Waco is, rather how accepting, assuming of ethnic diversity since that is what you noted.

For reference we are originally from CA, East Bay Area and have lived in TX (Dallas) for a few years. Our daughter attended Baylor and I think you will find it very welcoming.

Its pretty easy to find out that the population of the city as well as the University is pretty vanilla, but so is most of the midwest. My second daughter goes to Oklahoma and the same can be said there. As a Baptist institution there is a student code of conduct you should be comfortable with but otherwise I think if you go in accepting the population there, they will welcome you. If you come in either expecting to be excluded or thinking the town is full of hicks you may have an issue.

As a former student from Orlando, I found everyone very accepting & friendly towards OOS students. There was a little bit of a “Baylor Bubble”, but there are lots of colleges that have their version of a bubble. I quickly became well versed in all things Texas. (I told myself I would never buy a pair of boots … I totally did. lol) IMO, Baylor was the a perfect size college to find where I truly fit. Bonus: I always has places to stay for long weekends or Thanksgiving Break!

What type of horror stories ?

Baylor & Waco lean conservative.

Waco is tough to describe as ‘accepting’ to someone whose frame of reference is San Francisco.
Baylor students are friendly. I assume you applied because you agree with the code of conduct and the beliefs it implies. Being part of a community has its benefits.

One of the best lines that I have ever read: “Waco is tough to describe as “accepting” to someone whose frame of reference is San Francisco.”

Thank you all!

I don’t know what horror stories you could have heard because there is zero issue why you would have an issue at Baylor. I know of several people from the bay area, including minorities, and they love it here. If you’re genuinely concerned then live in North Russell, it has the most ethnically diverse students.

“What type of horror stories? Baylor and Waco lean conservative.”

That seems a narrow-minded remark.

It isn’t “horrible” to be liberal or conservative. And I thought college was a time to expand horizons. And out of thousands of students, I am fairly confident there would be a wide range of political and religious viewpoints.

Perhaps OP has a more specific question. He seems very open-minded to consider a college so far from home, and certainly in a different part of the U.S. I love what @justpaying said about the boots. Why not enjoy the differences?
