I'm thinking about sending in some of my music samples (viola and/or piano performance) as part of my application when the time comes to apply for colleges (looking into HYPS, etc). How advanced of technique should I have in these areas so that they help me instead of hurt my chances? I will have been playing for several years but I'm not sure if I will be good enough, or what they think will be good enough. Anyone have any suggestions or are there levels of music you should have at least reached by then? As in, I wouldn't want to be mistaken and think I'm really good when I'm not in their opinion. Thanks!

I think this is one of those cases where if you don't already know, you probably are not at a level where it will help your application. Have you placed in any competitions, won any awards, played in any well-known venues, are you in a youth symphony? Musicians that send in supplements are usually quite accomplished and most have been playing since early childhood. Your music instructor should be able to give you some guidance on this matter.

On the other hand, sending in a supplement that is not up to standards will probably not actually hurt your chances at admission - it just won't help.
