Hi, I’m a guy considering enrolling to Haverford. I am very interested in taking Russian during my college years, but because Haverford is a pretty small school, I will only be able to do this at Bryn Mawr. So I have a few questions:

1) How are guys treated in Bryn Mawr classes? I’m not the type of guy who would like to be the only guy in a class, for example. I’m more on the shy side, and although I wouldn’t mind taking classes at Bryn Mawr, I would like to know how guys who take classes there are viewed. (Is there any gender discrimination, are they singled out in classes, or are they treated like “one of the girls”, etc.)

2) Do many guys actually take classes at Bryn Mawr? I know it’s a women’s college and all, but I seriously want to continue taking Russian in college. So if anyone reading this has had any experience with having one or several guys in their class, please reply.

3) Silly question, but are there male restrooms at Bryn Mawr?

Thanks for answering my questions! I literally have no idea how this would work. And this is a legitimate concern for me, because if I choose to enroll in Haverford, this situation would definitely occur. Sorry if I offend anyone with my ignorance!

There is atleast one guy in each of my classes at Bryn Mawr this semester. I will say that often there aren’t many guys in most of the classes. Maybe between 1 and 5, but I’m not sure. There might more in classes that aren’t offered at Haverford, such as History of Art or Cities. Moreover, if some math or science class is not offered at Haverford one semester, for example, the guys might choose to take it at Bryn Mawr. Personally I have never felt that the guys in my classes were discriminated against, or treated unusually. You should think about whether you might feel uncomfortable for your own reasons though.
Yes, there are male restrooms at Bryn Mawr. We do have guys around campus most of the time, and also, we have male professors in all departments. Each residential hall is also required to have atleast one restroom that anyone can use.
I don’t think taking a class at Bryn Mawr should be a problem at all and beacuse Haverford is a great school I’d say you should really consider it.
Good luck :)

I second the previous poster’s observation that there aren’t many guys in most Bryn Mawr classes. I am a senior now and only two of my Bryn Mawr classes (that I recall) have had three or more male students in them. Statistically speaking, the average Bryn Mawr class is probably ~5% male. Of course the actual number of male students varies by department and class.

I have not observed guys being treated differently from girls, but I am female and may not be the best person to ask! I have however noticed that the male students tend to clump together when there’s more than one. That might indicate that they are uncomfortable being in the minority, or it might just mean that they were already friends before they enrolled in the Bryn Mawr class. Haverford is a small college after all, and there’s a good chance that students with common interests take a lot of classes together.

Thank you both for answering my questions! You’ve relieved my concerns about Haverford / taking classes at Bryn Mawr. To b@r!um, I didn’t mean any offense by that statement. I just meant to ask whether boys are treated like the rest of the class (which would be all girls). That statement sounded better in my head.

I’m actually a BMC freshman taking Russian right now, so I can give you a very specific answer to your question. My class of eleven includes six Haverford students, five of whom are male. I’ve never seen any gender discrimination. The guys and girls do tend to separate themselves (at least in my class) but we all get along pretty well and we go to meals together after classes at least once a week. You certainly won’t be singled out in any way. There are lots of guys in the BMC Russian department, because (as you said) they have to take it here if they want to take it. I would strongly encourage you to come to Haverford, take Russian, and not worry at all about being discriminated against because you’re a guy. It’s highly likely that you won’t be the only one, and even if you are, no one will make you feel awkward. And yes, we do have male restrooms. There are coed restrooms in the Russian House, actually. If you have any other questions, please let me know!
