I am very interested in staying fit and healthy when in college. How fit would you say the student body is? Meaning, do you typically see lots of people in the fitness center, running or cycling outside in the fall and spring or what? Also, are the healthy options everyday for food? thanks!

and are there classes like “spinning” or “pilates” or personal trainers available as well?

Colgate actually has tons of classes like spinning, pilates, yoga, rock climbing, and other stuff. You need to take two PE credits in your time at school and the gym is always packed. The health food in Frank is lacking… there is a fairly nice salad bar and sandwich bar, but they get a bit monotonous, although that can be said about all campus food. Of course, Colgate is on a huge hill and you can get a nice leg workout walking up and down a few times.
Additionally, if you are super into fitness, you can try some outdoor ed classes. They offer ones like caving as a pre-orientation trip. Those are super popular and help you meet people before school starts.
I checked the minutes of the Oct., 2014 Alumni Council meetings and found the following statistics supplied by
Christina Turner who runs the recreational and physical education programs:
45% of the student body participates in club and intramural sports / 75% of the student body participates when this includes varsity athletes
There are 40 active club sports which travel to other colleges for competition
Intramural sports have 850 participants (mostly male)
There are 24+ fitness classes per week for students/faculty/staff
