So, my grades are pretty good. I have gotten all A's and am taking 6 AP's (possibly more next semester) this year. I also have a 2270 superscored SAT.... but my EC's are average at best (to me). I had to move in the middle of high school which really hurt them.... Here they are. Let me know if you think this list will hurt me, will be helpful, or wont affect me either way. As a side note, I am applying to many top private schools. Here is what I am showing to the colleges:

Photography 4 years... over 100 hours
Hospital Volunteering 2 years... over 100 hours
Library volunteering 3 years... over 100 hours
Sports writer 2 years... published by Yahoo Associated Content
Tutoring 4 years... over 250 hours
Basketball "coach" 4 years
I have taught myself how to read Arabic and am now fluent... 4 years
Cricket Club (sport) president and founder 2 years
family responsibilites: taking care of brothers which has stopped me from playing sports after school: 4 years
Basketball (Not with a team).. 4 years... played for over a thousand hours in 4 years... I know this may not "count", but this is a large part of my life-- so I thought it was worth mentioning.
So, yeah. As you can see, there are a couple that are only for 2 years. This, again, was because of my move. I have already written a letter to my colleges talking about my move. Please let me know what you think. I feel terrible every time I think about my ECs :(

no need to thank me. just wish me luck. ill be applying for the ivies next year. anyway id say you should try and hone your writing skills when you still have time. the schools need a decent essay to take you in. its a very important factor as far as i know. best of luck!!!

I actually finished my essays a while back. I think that they are pretty good and give insight into my personal life and personality. Good luck!
Any other thoughts?

well my cousin is into cornell. sophomore year. he says… you need to prove you are unique and not just have incredible marks and ECs. you need to show them something that really intrigues them and they find it one-of-a-kind. thats all my cousin has gotta say.

hmm… that is interesting. My essay was about going back to my parents home country (Pakistan) and helping out the orphans there. Lol, not really sure if that counts as unique …

you can make anything unique if you want. id say it is a wonderful essay to display one’s character. however avoid the pifalls. dont be too boastful(or the examiners will think you are lying) neither be too modest(else they will think you lack confidence). just had a skype talk with my cousin and he says being musical however definitely helped him. you could find something musical about yourself too.

p.s. my cousin is playing piano for 16 years, violin for 9 years and he has been singing baritone for 6 years.whoa!! i myself am playing piano for 10 years and guitar for 7 years.
