How bad is Boston University's fin aid?

so thats like 25k a year for me??? thats better than i expected!

Yes thats exactly what happened. The NPC is hosted on Collegeboard. I did not record the earlier result so I really have no grounds for a complaint.

To answer the original question in the thread title, BU can be very generous to top applicants, students they really wont. If your stats etc. put you at or below the 50th percentile of admitted students then there will likely be a big gap in funding. And since BU does not guarantee to meet full need, you may find yourself admitted but BU is unaffordable.

Daughter was admitted ED to SHA today and I was very pleasantly surprised by the FA package. Actually, it’s almost exactly what the calculator on the website said it would be. I thought maybe that was overly optimistic and we’d have to turn down the ED offer based on FA. But they came through, so she’s going.

I got accepted today and received $40,000… basically all need was met and BU was definitely a reach for me so I would not be too concerned

@es8712 @DGDzDad congrats!!! thats so exciting (:

if anyone who got accepted today would let me know how the finanical packages are, that would be great!!

Encouraging! Congrats.

I got offered no money :frowning:

@woahitsnicole What was your EFC?

@TomSrOfBoston According to BU’s website, I was expected to be offered around $7,000 per year. My family very recently experienced a very drastic change in financial situation, so I am in the process of writing an appeal letter explaining what happened. Hopefully they can offer me something, I don’t expect anything huge. Anything can help, though :confused:

@es8712 if you don’t mind me asking, what were your stats? I am applying ed2. My stats are decent (I think I can get in, not 100% about financial aid though) and although on paper it looks as though I should have no problem affording it (basically I doubt I will get need based unless it is super generous), it’s still expensive and I would rather not go into debt nor be the reason my parents have less retirement money. Sorry if that was awkwardly worded but I hope you get what I mean.

i had a 32 ACT and 3.8 weighted GPA and a TON of leadership w extracurricular activities… i posted a full thing in the ED thread. I received a lot in grants but i also qualified for need based @kmg24601

I think I read somewhere that BU grant money (which they call “BU scholarship” from my recollection of my older child’s package) is guaranteed for all four years. Does this mean that if you get a great package your first year, but your income goes up, you will get to keep what they said they’d give you the first year? Does anyone know?

@redpoodles BU refers to need aid as grants and merit aid as scholarships. What you are describing is the Northeastern Promise. Not sure if BU has the same policy.

BU has a similar policy: https://www.bu.edu/finaid/aid-basics/bu-grant-assurance/

There is a video of Youtube where BU’s admissions director explains that FA applications are assigned a rating by admissions. The higher your rating, the better your chances of getting good financial aid. One consequence of this is that BU does not guarantee to meet your full demonstrated need.

BU has pretty shit aid. I got nothing, which was kinda disappointing, but I ended up with the Presidential Scholarship which covers $20,000 per year

I just got into my package and my parents income is in the 70k-80k range bc one of them is unemployed rn and BU gave me 52,000 in grants + 7,500 in work study/loans for a total of $59,500.

This discussion has been useful. My wife had to quit working last year as her mom was passing away from cancer. So a drastic swing in our income from 2015. So right now we have received $0 and have appealed. My gut is we will not get anything…but it is worth the effort.
