It seems like all the strong applicants for the elite and prestigious schools (HYPMS) have somehow managed to do some sort of "research." I feel really ignorant and naive, but can someone explain exactly what this means and what it entails? How can I find research opportunities near where I live?
Thanks so much!

I’m pretty sure your school counselor should have some resources.

There may not be many near where you live, and it is OK if you don’t have that kind of opportunity. What matters is that you do your best with what you have available.

Alright, thanks! :)

Are there any nearby research universities or labs nearby? If you’re not sure, ask either your science teacher, your school’s science chairperson (if you have one), or a counselor.

Additionally, there are opportunities available to every high school student over the summer, although you’d be too late for this summer. Here’s a list of many of the well-regarded ones. Some are free, some pay YOU, others give need-based aid.
