How can I help improve School Spirit

I go to a pretty small school of about 800 students in total with a population mostly being Hispanic then African American and my student body has a very poor school spirit. I’m a sophomore at the moment and next year I’m planning on running for President. I would love to see my student body increase in spirit. Our sports teams aren’t very good except for our soccer and basketball teams and we currently have no clubs which I think is because of the lack of positive energy towards actually finding passions and trying to be successful in life. I plan on having prep rallies and so forth, however if anyone could give any suggestions, I would be thankful for it. Thank you

Does your school have spiritwear? (T-shirts, sweatshirts, and other clothing with the school name, colors, etc.) If not maybe you could get your school to earmark some funding to give away free spirit wear to students. Most schools sell them but if you don’t have any spirit to begin with, most likely your population won’t buy the clothing. However, if they were given the item(s) they would probably wear the clothing. This could be a step toward creating the environment you seek.

Do you do things like spirit week such as one day wear school colors, one day wear wacky tacky, one day wear favorite sports or sports team colors etc. How about trying to get an fun event planned this year such as dancing with the teachers - small groups of students dance with a teacher to a song - they usually aren’t very serious or even that good but get people laughing and if you charge admission (ours is at night) could be a fundraiser. It would require getting teachers behind you and permission from admin. If you do have a plan with admin as to what the money would go towards.

It sounds as though the problem for your school might be monetary… even if spirit wear is available, kids may not be able to afford it. It’s still possible to increase spirit and pride, but you may not see it displayed on everyone’s chests.

You don’t need winning teams to generate school spirit. Often our school administration will publicize random acts of kindness by students and use it as an “We’re so proud to have students like these here at X high school” blurb. Got volunteer tutoring services? Students helping students is our strength! And we’re oh so proud of this teacher for going above and beyond for his students during AP exams week! Use your morning announcements to publicize whatever is good about your school, whether or not it has to do with sports.

Does your school have a parent-run booster club? Having an active and effective boosters group is a major asset as far as creating and perpetuating school spirit. If there is a group in place, ask to speak at one of their meetings and ask for their help.

There are small and free things you can do. If any newsletters go out (either the school administration, the principal, the students’ newspaper, or a boosters newsletter) you could publish a “Ten Reasons I am Proud of X School” list. You could ask teachers to nominate students who show the most spirit (or who are otherwise setting good examples) and reward them with free school swag (donated by the booster club or by local businesses)

Make sure you know your students.
Pep Rallies I think would be too much to start with.
First, maybe think about how your school communicates the acheivements of students. IS there a school paper or a school TV or video announcements? maybe try to talk about how the teams do…“The Basketball team Beat Union HS 56 to 45. Come out and support them on Tuesday!” “Maria Hernandez won the regional spelling bee”

Spirit day is fun…if people would participate.
