I really want to go into medicine, but I don’t know how to show interest in that as a high school student.
I have a couple of ECs/experiences that relate:
Currently volunteer at a children’s hospital 2 hrs/week but will pick up more shifts in the summer. I just don’t have time right now for more.
Last summer I did a summer program called “future physicians” and we learned about topics like obesity as well as shadowed doctors.
That’s it :-/ Last year I was meant to shadow a surgery as my aunt knows the head anesthesiologist at a nearby hospital but the night before my parents said “oh by the way we don’t want to drive you.” so that never happened and it was out of my control. I might be meeting the anesthesiologist in the future to chat but so far I don’t have anything planned with her. BTW anesthesiology is one of the two main things I’m interested in in terms of medicine.
Otherwise I mean I love to just read up on medicine and read articles etc on my own when I have time but I’m not doing any official activities relating to it. I’m also taking AP Chemistry this year(solid B grade) and biotechnology(A) and will be taking AP Biology next year.
None of my family members are in medicine other than my aunt who runs a nursing school but it’s pretty far away, over 1 hour train ride. I worked there last summer(office work, nothing medical as school is out during summer).
So my question is, what should I do to really get into medicine and prove that I want it? It truly is a lifetime dream of mine. I just need to show it.
(no need to keep reading but PS congrats to everyone who’s gotten into college so far!! )
Do you mean that you want to show your love of medicine to colleges when you apply? (I assume so, this is a college admissions forum!)
Your ECs already look pretty great to me! I’ll admit I don’t know much about medicine, but the fact that you have multiple ECs along the same lines definitely shows that you’re into the field. Your schedule also shows that you really like science and have the study skills to do well in rigorous courses, so I wouldn’t worry there.
I used my Common App essay to show my love of history (which is what I’ll be majoring in). I didn’t outright say anything about history specifically, but I made it clear as to why I like history so much. I imagine you could do something similar with medicine. Why do you like it so much? Give an anecdote about what first got you into it, or open with a scene from your volunteer work and go off of that to explain your love of medicine.
So my advice would be to just continue with what you’re already doing! If more opportunities in the medical field open up for you at this point, I’d advise you to go ahead and take them if they appeal to you, but don’t stress out over it! And if this is something really important to you, I’d recommend again to just talk about it in your essay. That’s what the essay’s there for, to show off what you’re actually made of, beyond test scores and volunteer hours.
I hope I helped! I’d assume you’re a sophomore or a junior from what you said about your schedule, so good luck in all of your future endeavors!
@TheZombieBear Thanks!! You’re right, for some reason I didn’t even consider the essay aspect of it. I definitely have a lot to say so I’m looking forward to writing about it now.
