My HS junior daughter is considering Elon. Study abroad is very important to her. It looks like it's fairly easy to have multiple study abroad experiences at Elon, like maybe two semesters abroad and a couple of winter terms...? At least that's what the Elon literature seems to imply. Can anybody tell me if having multiple abroad experiences to different countries is actually a common and fairly easy thing to accomplish during four years at Elon?

Thanks.

this one I can answer (had no idea about Furman)…

We have visited 3 times (d is attending in the fall)…every single student we have met has gone abroad multiple times…some only winter terms (3 since they usually stay at Elon for winter term freshman year), some winter and summer, some semester and winter…I have not met one person who has only gone once, except if changing majors has prevented it…

With the 4-1-4 program, it allows the kids that Winter term program for those that may not want to be away for an entire semester…

It is very common at Elon, extremely encouraged and seems to be quite easy to do…

of course, there is an extra expense involved, but this is not a $50,000 school…and there are alot of scholarship opportunities for study abroad…

It is very easy to study abroad multiple times from Elon - although most kids only do one semester abroad, the other times are the Winter term classes, which are 3 week study abroad courses lead by Elon professors. These are two very different types of experiences. Living abroad for a semester is more of a cultural immersion, whereas a Winter-term class lead by an Elon professor is focused on studying a particular topic on-site. (For example, I read a blog from a girl who did last winter term’s “Europe in a Time of War” class. She said they learned about D-Day on the beaches of Normandy, about the Holocaust while standing in Auschwitz, and about the Nuremburg trials while sitting in the courtroom).

My daughter is finishing her freshman year at Elon. She is signed up for a Winter Term study abroad next January. It will cost about $6000 (includes airfare from the US, all transportation during the trip, all housing and some meals). Many Winter term classes cost less - she is going very far away and the airfare is probably half of the cost.

D also plans to do either a semester abroad or another Winter abroad class. She has a good friend who is abroad for a semester right now (Junior) and who is also going abroad next winter term.

Elon runs nearly 2 dozen winter term abroad classes. The nice thing about winter term is that the kids don’t miss a whole semester on campus. The drawback is the extra expense (travel, housing & meals). Tuition for winter term is automatically included in your fall tuition - whether the student attends winter term on campus, goes abroad, or doesn’t attend winter term at all.

Over 90% of freshmen return to campus for winter term. Sign-ups for winter term study abroad classes occur during the spring the year before, so unless there are openings left it’s rare for freshmen to go abroad.
