How "competitive" is my school?

International,
ACT Average is 28
SAT Average is 1740

The national SAT average is 1500. If your school’s average is above that, then that says something - my school’s SAT average is a 963 CR/M and a 1433 for all three sections combined.

However, you haven’t really provided a complete picture here. What do students generally do after graduation? 4-year institution? What is your graduation rate? How about access to resources?

You see where I’m going here.

I see where you are going.

Does it hurt if your school does not have such high standing?

Here’s a competitive NYC HS for you:
SAT, Sum of Means of Three Sections ('09): 2141
Percent of Class, National Merit Semi-Finalists ('09): 36 percent
Percent of Class to Enroll at an Ivy League University ('10): 28.41 percent

@swimHYPW

It certainly doesn’t help. They seem to weigh the transcript less if your school doesn’t have a very good reputation. It’s easy to be valedictorian of a school where only 50% of the class graduates, and the average GPA is a 1.5, whereas it’s very difficult to be valedictorian at a competitive prep school.

If your school is generally weak, put extra work into those extracurriculars, as that’s likely where you’ll be proving yourself.

Yea, I understand.
I mean, our overall stats are not too great, but this is because we have an IB program within the major program. So if you took the stats of only the IB program, they would be much higher. Do admission officers see that?

@kwu: I could pull out the stats for schools like Andover and Groton, and destroy you :stuck_out_tongue: (Joke)

swimHYPW: They see it if your GC shows it to them in the school report that he or she is supposed to send, or otherwise highlights it in the GC letter. That’s their job. (They don’t always do it, unfortunately.)

^I am proud of my school.

@Lobzz

Let me help you. :)

Phillips Academy, Andover
SAT, Sum of Means of Three Sections ('09): 2062
Percent of Class, National Merit Semi-Finalists ('10): 9.86 percent
Percent of Class to Enroll at an Ivy League University ('09): 40.17 percent (lolwut)
Boarding/Day, annual tuition: 41,900/33,100

I’m not sure which is more ridiculous :)

Consider them together and it becomes a lot less ridiculous :)

^ Very well said.

old money rules forever!
