How competitive is the Cornell Scholars Program?

Yea, I wasn't too sure about Rollins either and didn't think small size would be a good thing until I visited. It really blew me away.

At least you got to stay overnight at Rollins though. They ushered us off-campus to this fancy-shmancy hotel before any student activity was able to get underway on campus. I had to come back for a recruiting trip in order to see the "unrated" version of Rollins lol.

And you are certainly not pretentious by any means. Cornell was obviously much more diverse, among finalists and among current scholars than was the rest of the student population. I still wonder how you weren't invited.

We had a cornell scholar last year from our school. She dropped IB, came to school about three times in her junior year, and took all her classes online. But she was born in Eastern Europe... hah. Not so much luck for a WASP kid who's lived in Orlando all his life.

The other kid from my school for the dean's scholarship threw up on the principal at prom because he was drunk and got suspended for 10 days and kicked off the soccer team. Haha. A diverse group indeed.

My host was incredibly cool. I told them how they were telling us the canned "No one drinks or parties here" thing and he was like "Man that's ridic." He then took me around campus and introduced me to all of his female friends. It was certainly a fun time :).

"I don't know how to say this without sounding pretentious, but after meeting the other kids there for the Dean's scholarship, I felt like I really should have been in the Cornell pool. My interviewer said that Cornell is forced to be more diverse. The dean's scholarship was anything but diverse... out of the 65 students there, 5 weren't white. It was a little ridiculous, hah."

Interesting. I saw a pix on Rollins site of the Cornel Scholars from, I believe last year, and everyone appeared to be white.

S is black, V+M SAT 1540, rigorous curriculum, grades...sigh..could be better.... He wasn't invited for the Cornell, but was invited for the Dean's. Go figure.

No one drinks or parties here? Haha, me and my host were probably the only two people not drinking Friday night that I encountered. Even the RA I visited had beer all over his room with a bunch of people just sitting around watching the game. Everyone was really cool about us not drinking though, we just had to say no once. No pressure, questions asked.

Oh, and Northstarmom, your approaching post 8,000. Make it something really cool lol :)

Curious about the drinking. Were students sitting around drinking basically to be social and hang out or were they drinking to get puking drunk?

Nice to hear that no one tried to force you to drink.

It was social, I didn't see anyone puke all night. Nothing that any other college wouldn't experience. I also didn't see any other drugs except for cigarettes, which was also a good sign. This was Friday night too, if that makes a difference. I just had to point out that what they told Visirale is completely false lol.

My D also attended the Dean's scholarship program Sun/Mon and had a nice time. Her hosts were very sweet, fun girls and definitely not into partying.

She also did not feel there was much diversity among the student body and was a bit disappointed in the class she attended.

Here's a link to names and pictures last year's Cornell Scholars. All seem to be white, nonHispanic: http://rollins.bm23.com/public/?q=message_preview&t=1&fn=Key&id=bcyjffvvpfzzcvteucsbpnvcoxbxbbp

I was at the Cornell scholar weekend, and I clearly saw that the diversity there is not reflected in the student population. That picture you show is more representative, as only the middle girl is not white. I do agree that current Cornell scholars are white, but the finalists were a little more diverse.

Well since I got rejected from all my ivies, and the odds of me getting accepted to Amherst, Williams, or Colgate with a decent-enough aid package is zero, looks like I'll be going to Rollins next year.

I'm really glad I went to the dean's scholarship thing. If not I'd be at UF next year and sitting miserably through giant classes. Nothing wrong with living on Park Ave. for 4 years... Plus my parents are getting me a new car if I stay in state... not a bad deal at all.

Has anyone who went to the Dean's Scholarship weekend heard about the scholarship yet? S said they were supposed to make decisions last Mon.

I was notified today that I did receive the dean's scholarship. I should be getting a new financial aid package within the week.

I'm going to Rollins too next year for ALL the same reasons as Visirale! Rejected/Waitlisted from all the OOS schools (Yale, Princeton, Duke, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins) and I like Rollins better than UF. Go Tars!

S got the $10k Dean's scholarship today!

Congrats! :)

Blah...i was so depressed when i got rejected from all of my out-of-state schools! But then I got my financial aid package from Rollins. I am getting almost $30K a yr, which is great since my parents are only giving me around $8K.
I got the Dean's Scholarship...and I thought the weekend was great. I loved my student host, she was AWESOME! But i do agree with whomever said the answers were "canned". I was informed that the hosts were "briefed" on what to say, but partying is definitely present!
I am really excited to attend Rollins this fall and I can't wait to meet you all!
