How competitive is the School of Engineering

Is Thayer as competitive as the rest of the college or is it any less competitive?

Thayer is the graduate school of engineering. If you apply to Dartmouth, you will be applying to Dartmouth College, not Thayer

Hold on, so undergrad engineering students don’t study at Thayer? Isn’t Thayer part of Dartmouth college?

Yes, they take courses at Thayer, but they do not apply to Thayer as undergraduates

I want to know if Dartmouth is very competitive for engineering and how many students are in the engineering sciences major?

Engineering sciences is fairly small at Dartmouth, around 100 students graduate with a B.E degree in 4-5 years

Is admission to the engineering program very competitive?

Once again, you do not apply to the engineering program at Dartmouth. You apply to Dartmouth college

I think he means is it respected?

To clarify, you apply to Dartmouth College as an undergraduate. You can choose to major in Engineering. Many students are Engineering Majors actually - in 2013, it was 4th at 8%. You will take classes at the Thayer School, which is on the same campus as Dartmouth, and Thayer faculty will teach your classes. The engineering buildings and faculty also cater to graduate-level students, which is where some of the confusion might be coming from.

Generally you’ll graduate in 4 years with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Engineering. If you want to be an engineer, you need a 5th year (or squeeze it into 4) for the Bachelor of Science in engineering. Then you can stay a 6th year for a Masters of Engineering Management (MEM) degree

If rankings mean anything to you (as you are considering Dartmouth), US News ranked Dartmouth no. 44 of undergrad engineering school programs (2013). Thayer’s graduate program is ranked 55 (2014).

Columbia is the only ivy that has a separate admission undergraduate school of engineering. All the other schools have engineering departments within the school.

@Ricck1 “Columbia is the only ivy that has a separate admission undergraduate school of engineering. All the other schools have engineering departments within the school.”

That is not correct. Cornell and Penn both have separate engineering schools too. Cornell calls theirs the College of Engineering. Columbia and Penn both call theirs the School of Engineering and Applied Science or SEAS.
