hey krazykool and smiles, which school do u guys go to? I go to Central High in Philadelphia. We usually send 20-30 kids to UPenn which would be 5% of our class.

Blue-collar middle class. Moderately competitive though a lot of party kids. This year, a lot of kids are going to college. Just...party schools.

Um, in the past, most people go to CC or stay local. Though a few years back, there was 6-7 kids going to top universities. None since or..few before. This year, it's been a lot more competitive with SOME kids applying to top universities. But, still, it's still the same-old party-school thing.

Going to Northeastern is an ACHIEVEMENT in my school. And it remains one. But, people go into shock when you even go to schools like BU/NYU. It's a big deal. That's like "top of the line" at my school. This year, it was a lot more competitive especially compared to last year. Still, it's considered a really big deal...

perception is a funny thing...

you'llsee and MIT08 go to the same school; from their descriptions, you might think they are talking about two different places. :)

as for my school... while i personally think it's on the decline, US News (or whatever it's called) placed it in the top 55 of public high schools. the top half of the senior class generally goes on to ivy/ivy caliber schools (granted, the class sizes tend to max out at slightly over 100 people), while "bottom-halfers" tend to go to top 50 schools. i guess it is pretty competitive (this year, about 12 people have gotten into Penn ED-and one of them is in the bottom half of the class).

my school is one of the best in the US....if u care abt Newsweek and stats....

chronicidal-I noticed you're in nova.. fairfax perhaps?
narcissa "most % of ppl going to ivies, highest average AP/SAT score"
I would dispute the last 2 claims. What's your school's ap/sat averages?

I go to one of the most competitive high schools in the country. I'm pretty sure we have the highest average ap/sat scores. Probably about 1/3-1/2 our class gets accepted to UVA and many many more good schools.

My school is hecka ghetto. Only 33% go to a four year college. Another 33% go to community college. The last third can't graduate yet.

Going to a ghetto school is an advantage for the ivies, right?

depends....................obviously.

i wouldn't say so. as i saw in another thread, one adcom from jhu said [paraphrasing] it doesn't matter whether you're valedictorian of your class if it's a crappy school. such as one school that named multiple valedictorians or something. if you stand out in your own right compared to applicants all over the country, then you have a chance and i see the coming from a poorer school to be an advantage. otherwise not at all. lack of challenging curriculum, opportunities, etc.

I have a class of 840..most of us go either to CC or to the local CSU (Long Beach).

semi-average.
average act score: 24
average sat (M+V): 1090
send about 21 ppl to UC's

90% go to community colleges or UH.
