How conservative would you consider Rhodes to be? Could a queer, liberal, feminist, or activist do well there? Or would there be opposition to an alternative lifestyle?

Thanks in advance!

Any thoughts?

Hi Cheer007, Rhodes may be located in the South but we are a very diverse school, as you can see here ( [Rhodes College | Profile of Entering Class](http://rhodes.edu/admission/3717.asp) ) we have kids from all over the country from lots of different backgrounds. We do have both liberal and conservative presences on campus, as well as our Kinney Program, which contains all of our service programs and clubs, including both Queer Advocacy and Women’s Services.

My inquiry is similar to Cheer007’s… D is a political and social liberal, officer of her school’s GSA (though straight), atheist, pro-choice, anti-NRA, etc. Would she fit in at Rhodes and in Memphis?

DGDzDad & Cheer007 - My daughter just enrolled at Rhodes for the Class of 2017 so I can’t answer your question but she sounds much like your daughter. She is political, socially liberal, pro-equality, pro-choice, not religious etc… My daughter is hoping Rhodes is diverse and she will be comfortable. Our visits there, including 1 overnight, indicate she will fit in just fine. I’ll try to remember to post back in a few months and let you know!

love2trvl - thanks! please let us know how it’s going for your D.

While Rhodes is not that high on my list, I will ask the question: How would an ultra-right (Tea Party) Conservative fit in at Rhodes?

Hey there Mr./Ms. Tea Partier. I am a faculty member at Rhodes. There are quite a few conservative faculty here. These folks (I am one of them) read Adam Smith unironically, advocate for more reading of Thomas Jefferson and Alexis de Tocqueville, and certainly sympathize with the Tea Party on a variety of fiscal issues–although I hesitate to speak for my colleagues. Best of luck to you!

I don’t recommend living in Memphis.

Living in Memphis is a neighborhood by neighborhood proposition. The neighborhood surrounding Rhodes College is lovely. Just don’t be stupid or naïve. Apply that sentiment anywhere on earth.
