how do you figure? If tuition is $23, 877 and you spend $6000/yr on rent which would be $500 a month. Factor in another $1000 for books and maybe $2500 for food and you're at $34,000. You think there aren't similar expenses at Cornell?

i took this from another post entitled appropriately "price of uva."
granted i wrote these numbers initially, but still. most numbers are rounded off, but won't really make a significant difference. (btw, tuition this year was 24,300)

Tuition for OOSers 25,000/year
Rent is 500/month 6000/year.
Utilities 600-1000/year
Books 1000/year
Food 3600/year (corner meal plan)
Travel 300/year (gas to and from Jersey)
Frat dues 1650/year
Spending money 3200/year (about 400 a month/8 months)
Spring break 800-1000/year
Beach week 400/year

now, even if you take out spring break, beach week, and frat dues. (things that a lot of kids at UVA do) you're between 39,000 and 41,000. thats how i figure 40k for an out of stater.

Regardless of how much UVA is, it's still a bargain compared to schools like Cornell. If your yearly expenses at UVA can be pushed up towards $40k, they can be pushed up towards $50k at Cornell (and others.)

Oh, and a couple of comments on jags' numbers:

$400/month is a lot in spending money. I'm not particularly cheap and I'd still be hard pressed to spend more than $100-$150/month.

Also, a lot of these numbers shouldn't be considered costs of attending UVA. Things like spring break and beach week will be the same at every college (or if you take vacations during your k-12 years.)

first off, i don't know who you are if you spend only 100-150 a month. thats NOTHING. i mean...i guess if you don't go to bars, and don't spend anything, you can get by on 100-150 a month.

2ndly, i said even if you leave out spring break, beach week, frat, its still costing you 40g's. im very aware that cornell will end up costing upwards of 50g, im just saying that uva isn't the great "bargain" for OOS students that most people think it is. you won't get through uva as an oos on 30000.

jags, you have a lot of unnecessary spending that someone on a tight budget could easily cut out.

Tuition for OOSers 25,000/year
Rent is 500/month 6000/year.
Utilities 600-1000/year
Books 500/year (I spend even less at half.com and government requires tons of books)
Food 2250/year (make it yourself)
Travel 300/year (gas to and from Jersey)
Spending money 1200/year (about 150 a month/8 months)[very possible]

=$36,250

Tell me where out of state you can get as good an education as UVa for any less?

Yeah, I'd have no idea how I would be blowing 100 bucks a week here, if food is already considered in the other expenses. That's a ridiculous rate of spending on trivial things, and doesn't accurately reflect the 'cost' of uva.

Either way, UVA is indeed one of the more cost efficient out of state colleges to attend, especially if you're coming from a state where you don't want to attend the public schools there.

im sure if you are on a tight budget, and cut out all expenses, uva is pretty cheap in comparison. but honestly, if you're on a really tight budget, you'd probably either be an r.a. or live on grounds, where its substantially cheaper.

also, if your on such a tight budget, i don't know why'd you go to uva out of state. might as well just go to your instate school - or, if you can get in, unc. (which is a lot cheaper then uva).

btw, i really find it surprising that you guys don't spend alot of money. its so easy to drop 100 in a week. just last night i spent like $30, and will probably do so for friday and saturday. do you people who spend nothing not go on dates...or buy booze...or do anything besides rent free movies from clemons?

The financial aid office at UVA personally called me a few days ago. The man introduced himself, first and last name, and said that the admissions office sent him a letter stating that i was applying for financial aid. He said hes calling to ask me if i have any questions about finances.

I have a good question. Now of course i was happy to receive this call. BUT, is this wat they do with all people who apply for aid (which runs in the multiple thousands), or do they do this for those who they already accepted?

My son got an email that was essentially the same thing. Maybe they call some and email others?

jags86: I couldn't help but respond. This 100 dollar a week "play" money, did you earn that or do your parents give that spending $? Many students earn their spending money with summer jobs and that money needs to last the school year. You can bet that kids in that situation are a bit more careful how they spend.

well bluejay, i basicly just charge everything to my parents. and i don't think ive ever really spent more then like $500 in a month, so they;re usually pretty chill about it.

now, don't get me wrong, ive worked every summer since i was 14. i just shove it in a savings account. but honestly, even if my parents cut me off with the "play money" as you call it, i could still spend exactly the same as i do now and not be strapped. the only difference is the amount of $ i'd have sitting in the bank when my parents do eventually cut me off.

100 dollars of play money..............damn. I wonder what you purchase...........

Hahahaha, i love drinking for free everywhere on grounds bc idiots like the poster above always ends up buying the alcohol!

I'm really curious how my spending habits make me an idiot. Also, I have no idea why you think i'm buying other people alcohol lol. I personally don't throw parties, and my bar tab/food/whatever i feel like buying is spent on me buddy.
