How detrimental to the admission/scholarship process is the dicontinuation of a sport in your senior year? Would I be able to explain my reasoning behind it and how good of a reason would it have to be?

I would think it would only be detrimental if the condition of your admission or scholarship was athletic. In other words...if your admission and scholarhip are not based on participation in a sport and this was an EC that you simply discontinued, I can't imagine it would be a problem. Now...if you are a recruited athlete that would be another story.

while scholarships would not be based on this, i've put a substantial amount of time into it and most do consider participation in athletics as a factor (scholarships and admission)...that's why i'm having such a hard time deciding

My son did NO sports his junior or senior years in high school. He did other significant ECs...but NO (nada) sports. He got accepted at 6 of the 7 colleges to which he applied with merit aid at most. If you have a good reason for not continuing the sport, then do so (and in my opinion it can be because you simply don't want to do it anymore). Just don't expect to get a crew scholarship if you quit the crew team (for example).
