How did you 2000+ scoring SAT students study?

My tutor was about 25-30 an hour?

This is not relavent to this thread but where can I find specific answers to the questions in the second edition blue book?

Does AOPS and and Khan Academy help with SAT math scores? If not, what have you found beneficial?

I’ve tried khan academy, but he works with the first edition of the blue book; I have the second edition of the blue book.

First time I didnt study at all and got a 2300. Wasn’t happy with math (700) so I retook in June. For that, I used the Kaplan book to study. Most important thing is practice tests.

I bought top rated study books in each section. I started first with CR and W study because those were actually my strongest areas. I learned 3 new words everyday from “Rock the SAT” and from private study. Also if you go on Sparknotes, they give you some great advice for the writing portion of the SAT. The most important thing to practice (at least in my case) was the pacing. If you don’t get through the passage quickly enough with time leftover to double check your answers, that can hurt you. Focus on skimming through the passage while still overall getting the main concept of the story, and then focus on the individual parts of the passage only when a question refers to the certain parts of the story (does that make sense?)

Also just a note, the SAT questions for CR will never give you questions that don’t have answers which are fully backed up within the passage! Basically, if you read the passage carefully, you can find the correct answer by locating a point in the text that fully supports your answer (and it IS there). Ha ha I hope I’m not confusing you!

Math was killer for me, and was what I had to study for most. I spent about 5 months studying for math because I hadn’t had geometry for 2 years and there was a lot of geometry on my test! I got this book called “The SAT Math Bible” that helped me tremendously! Then I also did Barron’s math. I just focused on concepts I needed to shape up in like functions, and circles (those were my two weak areas). Also with math, you need to become familiar with the ways the SAT will try to trick you. When I first started, I fell into these traps! The SAT math section will give you questions where you think you can only solve it by doing it a certain way, but there are actually a lot of short cuts that will save you so much time during the math section (you will find these out by reading through your prep books).

Then I finally got the CB blue book. It’s important to read through the review on the different sections before taking the practice tests. Read through the entire reading review section, writing review section, and math review section, focusing most intently on areas you find that you struggle with. Then take a practice test every week or every two weeks. It is important that you take EVERY practice test in there! After you take a practice test go to the official blue book owners area on collegeboard.org (find here: [Welcome to the Official SAT Study Guide Book Owner’s Area](<a href=“SAT Study Guide – SAT Suite | College Board”>SAT Study Guide – SAT Suite | College Board))

Read over the questions you got wrong and find out WHY you got them wrong. Then do some review on those concepts/types of questions before moving on to the next practice test. Repeat this routine every time you take a CB blue book practice test!

Finally, it may benefit you to sign up for the SAT online course offered by collegeboard (find here: https://satonlinecourse.collegeboard.com/SR/index.jsp</a></p>

Oh and also take the SAT question of the day every day! And I also found this site useful http://www.atekkie.com/2010/01/18/sat-question-of-the-day-archive-search/</a> it lets you look up every past “question of the day” question through a search engine! So what I did was I would type in words like “circle” or “function” to help find questions I struggled with, and improve in that area!

Basically, you just have to become familiar with the “tricks” and types of questions the test uses.

I’m sure you can get the score you are looking for if you STUDY HARD and take practice tests! Basically, the CB blue book needs to become your bible this summer ha ha! But good luck, and good for you for wanting to study and improve your score. I wish you all the luck and know you can do it!

Can someone who made the June 1 deadline PM me the Direct Hits list? TIA

Does anyone know if “the sat math bible” is really good?

By the way if you DO get the sat math bible I’m talking about… I’m talking about this one:

[Amazon.com: PowerScore SAT * Math Bible (9780982661819): Victoria Wood: Books](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0982661819/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=1889057487&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=06823Y6H7W3VQ72W9DGW)

TAKE BOTH tests! Take them 2 or 3 times

 1. SAT (General), plus at list 2 SAT (Subject Tests)
 2. ACT

Please,
Study hard for SATs and ACT, write good essays during the application process!
SATs and ACT score is very, very important extremely important for admission!

I did Princeton review lasses, improved my score by 200 +, but also i would HIGHLY RECCOMAND TAKING SAT CLASSES ESP FROM KAPLAN, OR PRINCETON REVIEW.

I used Barron’s SAT book for the vocabulary cards. For the essay, I think that taking classes actually helped. That’s basically the CR and W section.

I also took a bunch of practice tests. I personally think that that’s a good enough strategy for math. It’s a decent strategy for Writing as well, since you can learn from your mistakes and avoid them. So yeah, basically a bunch of practice tests. And make sure you learn how to pace yourself.

Any recommendations regarding timing?

endurance endurance endurance. raised my score 180 points from an 1860 to a 2040 simply because i was able to finish each section and check my work prior to the time limit. just take as many practice tests as you can.

I got a 2340 on my SATs. I studied using silverturtle’s guide and the Official College Board Blue Book.

^
that’s it???

I got a 2370, and I did pretty much what xanthos did. If you want a more thorough explanation though, look at this: [The Test Prep Series- Nerld Blog](http://www.nerld.com/blog/the-test-prep-series/). It sums everything up pretty nicely.

First SAT practice test, got like an 1800. (about beginning of soph year)

Did about three blue book tests before jan 2011 test, scored 2080 (accidentally omitting last four writing MC)

Did a princeton review class, somewhat BS’ed the work, and scored a 2290 in Jun.

Now I am going to push myself toward a 2400, trying to get as well into the 2300’s as possible. I currently bought Barron’s Passport to the SAT because it was small, cheap, and concise. I have only done the vocab so far and I like it, though it is not really that difficult. Unfortunately I cannot yet vouch for the rest of the book and I wa sunable to find any reviews for it.

Take lots of practice tests from the Blue Book and review the wrong answers/ questions you weren’t sure about! I took five and my score shot up 150 points, finally hit 2000 ^__^

And it helps to take the practice tests under the real time limits cuz then you’re more comfortable. Also, try it all in one sitting, once a week! :)

My first SAT, I just checked out an old Princeton Review book from my school’s library and did two practice tests on the computer from the CD. I also got the CollegeBoard Question of the Day sent to my email and did those every morning.

For my second SAT, I didn’t do anything.
Scores:
March 2011: 2180
June 2011: 2250 (2290, superscored).

My first was 2130 (760 math, 710 reading, 660 writing). I studied with two practice tests. My second I took 3 practice tests and read parts of the princeton review book. I also looked at silverturtles guide. I don’t think it helped much but silverturtles guide was ok. I ended up with a 2310 on the second one (780,770,760 math, cr, writing respectively)
