~2200 scorers trying to achieve 2300+ club

On the November SAT, I scored 2190. I did a practice test the day before. I got a 690 in math (5 wrong), 750 in CR (4 wrong), and 750 in writing (4 wrong and 10 essay)
I'm retaking it in January. Right now I'm on xmas break and I'm studying HARDCORE because I want to get 2300+.
Anyone else in a similar boat? What are you doing to improve your score? I feel like once you get to that point where you're getting 3-5 questions wrong in each section max....it's hard to improve.

Im in the exact same boat. 220 PSAT. Taking first time in January. Have gotten 2220,2330,2160 on first 3 practice tests. Math and writing are the easiest to improve. Knowing ALL concepts in those is imperative so that you don’t play it by ear (for writing) or have to improv (for math). If you know all the facts for math and are just making stupid mistakes, try plugging your answer back to check and just practice more. For writing, learning all of the rules has helped me go from 600 to 700’s. Familiarity is key. For CR, vocab can only be learned the hard way (use direct hits if anything). Passages are just familiarity. In short, writing should be the easiest to improve, but practice tests should help all aspects. Use the official guide. That’s what I’m doing. Tests, vocab, essay.

got 219 on PSAT, trying to improve my CR skills this vacation. I got a 60 on CR…I hope to raise that to 700+ by time January SAT comes. My weakness lies on the passage questions ): very hard to improve for me.

@krazy, for cr just keep doing practice sections from the official guide. then THOROUGHLY read the answer explanations. after a couple tests you will be able to think the way they think

@hischoolstudent, yeah the official guide is my best friend. i know all the concepts. i think i just need to keep practicing so that i don’t get tripped up by the tougher questions. taking a 4-hour long test every day this xmas break would be too PAINFUL i’d feel like i’m torturing myself. so right now i’m just using the guide to do individual sections. i will do a couple more practice tests in one sitting obv since it’s important to simulate testing conditions. how many tests are you trying to get through over xmas break?

but yeah i’m glad other people are in the same boat as me. i’m doing all this work while other people are shopping and relaxing so it’s nice when you find other people who are doing the same thing haha

Yeah. Ive done a practice test for 4 straight days and I’m kinda feeling lightheaded so I would recommend sticking to one or two a week at most.

the week before sat, i was doing 1-2 full ptests a day.

and you werent mentally exhausted?

probably gensis built up his mental stamina beforehand

i wanted a high score :(

i’m in the same metaphorical boat :P

in october i received 2200c (770m 700cr 730w) and im aiming for 2300ish

the best way i think to improve is to look over what you did wrong and cover your “major” weaknesses. (though you probably dont have any if you score around 2200)

for example, i got screwed over in the essay for writing and later figured out that writing only 1 page was just asking for an 8. i also realized that i must have made a silly error in math so im not really going to grind math. as for CR, im just memorizing vocab and doing a ton of practice tests.

to answer your question in 3 words: DO PRACTICE TESTS

Same here. I spent most of my Thanksgiving break doing practice tests. Fortunately, it paid off handsomely.

^What did you end up getting? Where were you before you did those practice tests? Did you review them extensively after doing each one? I don’t mean to interrogate you, but I’m always curious about success stories, esp if they’re about something I’m trying to accomplish myself :)

He got a 2400.

I scored a 730 CR, 730 Math, and 770 Writing. On the PSAT I scored 73 CR, 80 Math, 71 Writing. I know I can get a full score on Math… I just really need to work for it. I also want to bump up my CR score… any advice?

Practice makes perfect. o.0

I did 3-4 PT tests a day during winterbreak last year and it helped immensely. I focused more on CR because I had failed my first time. I did better after that.

Let’s see: I got a 2400. I was at about a 2200 before I did those tests. I reviewed the questions I missed after each test long enough that I knew why I missed a certain question. I tried not to look online (CC or CB or somewhere else) for an explanation unless I was really, really stumped. To be honest, before I did these tests, I had the skills to answer virtually every question correctly within the time limits. I did so many tests in such a short time period to build mental stamina and to expose myself to any weird questions that CB has used before and how to tackle them. In between tests, I memorized both volumes of DH (especially the day before the test–I stayed home from school and memorized every single word with the help of my mom).

^CONGRATS! omg…that’s AMAZING. you’re my hero haha.

Pi, if you memorize all words in direct hits, is it true that you should not miss more than 1-2 Sentence completions(which are my main weakness right now)?

@314159265, nicely done with the 2400 as a Junior. I feel so inferior to people like you. :P
