<p>For those of you who looked for a tutor for your kids over the years, I was wondering what method you used to find the tutor and what kind of situation worked best for you (private tutor in your home, private tutor in the library, afterschool classes at a private academy, etc.).</p>
<p>I have two teaching certificates but instead of being in a standard classroom, I have been tutoring kids for enrichment. I've done private tutoring and worked for an academy. I have built my own curriculum using children's books instead of textbooks and workbooks. So I'm wondering the best way to find parents and students who are interested in this kind of enrichment. (And the best way for them to find me). Would classes in an academy setting be most appealing? Or private lessons? And what's the best way to get my name out there for those looking for tutoring?</p>
<p>I used an online service to find a tutor. He came to our home and we were billed online. We would have been fine meeting in a neutral place like a library, but really did not want a classroom environment as this was for an older child and I think school stress was adding to his problem.</p>
<p>When my D was in middle school, we used Kumon, and a local former teacher who networked through the schools. ( that was very short lived as she was not willing to adapt her teaching style to allow for disabilities-) Kumon was more flexible, and the owner worked with D for several years. We had to go there for both. When she was in high school, she worked with her classroom teachers before or after school, at the school.</p>
<p>We’ve also found tutors through online agencies, although for her level as she is now in college it has been difficult to find one that can help with university level math & science.</p>
<p>We found a tutoring service by asking other parents if they could recommend a tutor. Several parents mentioned the same local service first when listing possible tutors. Our kids would go to the (small) offices (in our town) of the service. We were happy with the results.</p>
<p>When my son was struggling in Chemistry I asked his teacher for a recommendation. The name she gave me didn’t work out but I did find a service on his high school website. He’s had the same tutor for a couple of years (math and science). The tutor comes to our house and has really made a difference for our son. Now the tutor we have is specific to the areas that he needs and they work on homework and assignments from class so no supplemental material from the tutor.</p>
