How did you find out about CC?

Am I the only “old timer” left who “defected” from a rival college forum?

Billy,

bs= boarding school, CC = College Counselor.

thumper1, I have seen user names here that are the same as those of individuals at the other forum I used to visit, so I suspect you aren’t the only “defector” from a rival forum!

Ah, that’s a better meaning for BS than what is generally used. Thanks for clearing that up.

Maybe CC doesn’t let you post rival names to prevent defection, haha.

Rival forum shut down before 2006. Many posters migrated in this direction and sent info about CC to others from that other forum. Of course, being that long ago, many no longer have kids in college (me included).

I found CC in December of 09 when I was checking when W&M would release ED decisions for a friend of D1’s. Been here ever since (although changed my screenname along the way so the date is different).

A bit too late into D1’s college process (she was a '10er) but quickly made use of what I did find and have been continuing to use it for my younger 2, not to mention have found an awesome group in the parents thread :)

I was on Naviance and saw some interesting posts about the colleges I was researching. At first, I thought I had to first go to Naviance to then go to college confidential. Geez, I. am. so. computer. illiterate.

From the google.

My son used to post once in a while on CC (mostly on the U of Chicago forum, I think, because that was his first choice from the time he was about 15), back when he was a junior in high school and until sometime his senior year. He mentioned the place to me, and although he hasn’t posted here in at least three years (except once or twice when I was in the hospital the summer before last), I never left.

(He also apparently used to post much earlier, when he was 12 or 13, pretending for fun to be a high school senior applying to college, with an entirely fictional history and statistics, to see if he could fool people. He managed quite well, and made a number of friends 4 or 5 years older than he was who didn’t hold it against him when he finally confessed. He’s still in touch with one of them. Of course, the college application process was much less stressful for him when it was all just a game he was playing, than it was in reality several years later!)

I was looking on the college and career center website of another local high school and found a link for CC. I lurked throughout high school and joined CC during my freshman year of college. I first learned about my chosen university from threads such as the famous “What I’ve learned about full-ride scholarships” and applied to 2 other colleges based on what I’d read on CC.

A friend whose kids are each one year older than my kids introduced me to it, when her oldest was looking for colleges. We now refer to this friend as my crack dealer.

She has since moved on to a discussion board about cruises.

From Naviance. I thought I’d stop coming here after DD finished her transition into her freshman year, but I learned so much here that I can’t help but feel the need to give back and try to offer newbies and other parents support/advice.
