I’m a ccc student, With many prerequisites for classes, and IGETC requirements etc what made you decide how or what to major in?
Different schools have different requirements and pre-requisites and it even seems like they have different preferences etc.
Isn’t it best to take what you like, that way when you’re done with all of your units, you have an honest idea of what you want to major in, and your preqrequisties will automatically fit the 4 year that has those pre requisites? and you will also be a good fit for the schools pre-requisites? Meaning you will naturally fall into a 4 year institution that wants a student with a certain type of classes that they took?
I think this thread assumes a lot, naturally and understandably for your own purposes. A lot of people choose a major starting day 1 and either stick with it or change when that choice leads to another subject they find they prefer.
You didn’t really provide any information about yourself. A career choice is made IMO mainly based on two things:
- Enjoyment of Work / Subject
- Pay of Job Field
You weigh those who and find the option that best fits one BUT also satisfies 2 for the lifestyle you plan/want to live. The second is universal to everyone and relatively easy to evaluate. The first is completely personal: we need to know what you enjoy, what you do better in, etc.
As far as prereq’s go, you probably should have gone through the above process before you did prereq’s to avoid irrelevant classes, but from here it would be best to do the above ASAP and see what conclusions you reach.
I suppose you could do as you suggested, but you ensure less accuracy with that IMO. You could end up with a broad scope and no focus. Even if you can’t pick Major X, if you can narrow it down to Field X that is all you may need, as prereq’s are broader.
Doesn’t career choice come near transfer? As in, when its time to specialize or pick a concentration, that’s when you consider career choices and what you like as a subject. It’s a little hard to pick a career when you only know a basic idea of what it is that people do in these careers. The funny thing is, you wouldn’t really have a better idea until you take a lot of lowe rdivision classes.
I was referring more to transferring and taking pre requistie classes to transfer to a 4 year institution (One step at a time). I’ve been searching through assist.org and many institutions have a lot of different requirements as their core classes, and others have very reccomended or very specific types of courses they want you to take.
If you don’t know which place you want to transfer to or would accept you, and don’t know of your major, isn’t it good to take all of the lower division classes of the fields that interest you the most? (Avoiding the ones that all of the instiutions don’t accept) Which is what Igetc is good for. A lot of them share courses though.
Because all of the transfer requirements differ, its a little hard to pick the exact classes you want to take, because the requirements for all of the schools differ on some by about 12 units.
I guess lhe best thing might be to is to take all of the required courses of every institution, narrow it down, then go from there.
