How different is MechE from AeroE?

I'm really interested in going into an Aerospace related job like NASA or Lockheed Martin, but I probably won't be able to major in Aerospace Engineering when I go to college. Could I still do something like this with a MechE Bachelor's?

Also, can I get a Master's in AeroE if I get a Bachelor's in MechE? Would making the switch be too hard?

Yes. In fact, many people recommend getting a degree in mechE as opposed to aeroE even if you do have the opportunity for your undergrad degree. It's more versatile, and you can definitely do aerospace for a MS. The two majors really aren't all that different.

My understanding (which is by no means official) from speaking with professors and engineers is that MechE can segue into AeroE, but not necessarily the other way around. I think going from B.MechE to M.AeroE is a great idea.

Hertz is right on. More flexibility with ME's. ME's can work in aerospace, AAE's are not likely to work in the petro-chemicals industry.

First year is basically the same for all engineers; ME and AAE differ a little in year two, then are very different after that.
