How difficult is finding affordable housing in your 3rd year and beyond?

Since housing isn’t guaranteed all four years at UCSD, any experiences from current upperclassmen and alumni would be greatly appreciated! I don’t live close enough to UCSD to be able to commute to school from home, and a quick Google search showed me that apartments near the La Jolla area are exorbitantly priced.

Any advice?

Have you seen this Facebook page in which UCSD students advertise to other students the vacancies in their apartments or rental homes? https://www.facebook.com/groups/2387457222/ (CollegeConfidential may block the word Facebook in the link, so you may need to type it in). I think it provides helpful examples of the range of prices that current students are paying. (The lowest prices may be further away from campus or not near the convenient bus routes, so that would be a trade-off to consider).

I don’t yet have any personal experience to share about renting off-campus apartments near UCSD. Our son is now a sophomore and will need to start looking for an apartment soon. The process is unfamiliar and a little intimidating to us. We are grateful that UCSD was able to give him that second year of living on campus in a UCSD apartment. Many public colleges only provide on-campus housing to freshmen, and I think it would have been very stressful to our son if he had needed to start figuring out the logistics of finding rental housing when he was still just halfway through his first year away at college.

Yep, you’ll need to type “facebook.com” in place of the **** . Hmmm…not sure if they’ll block out what I just typed. Use facebook+dot+com in place of the ****

@SunnyByTheBay Thank you!!
