How difficult is Mechanical Engineering?

I know I’m a little late to the post but, could someone get a Mech E degree, get a civil job, if they liked it take the Civ E PE exam, if they didn’t like it change towards a Mech E direction???

I’m not sure about the PE exam requirements (this might vary by state) but I can tell you that an ME degree will certainly qualify you to work in the structural analysis area. MEs take a lot of mechanics courses. As an ME you could focus more on mechanics and take some finite element, structural dynamics, and vibrations courses as electives.

I knew a couple of mechanical engineering students who did internships in civil engineering. Why not do that instead to explore other fields that you may be interested in? It’s less of a commitment and it won’t be as much of a problem changing jobs.

Or have you already graduated?

No I haven’t graduated. In fact I’m only about a year in. But like the OP I’m having a hard time deciding. But I figured if MechE was really that broad that it may allow me to explore Civil(which I think I may enjoy more), and if I didn’t like it, jump back into something to do with MechE.

Yah I don’t know if this is any help to anyone. If you’re like me you weren’t immensely engaged with career services because you were busy with homework and whatnot. Any engineers looking for work should check out [Arinc jobs](http://jpbs.arinc.com). They do a lot of rail/transit work among many other things. They work with the military in case any enginerds here served in the military.
