How do colleges "Superscore"?

Some colleges that I am applying to state that they will take the highest score of each section if you submit multiple ACT test dates. I know that this is called super scoring.

I am just curious about the process by which they do this. Do they have computers that automatically superscore the results of each applicant before looking at the application or do they look at each composite during the decision process and calculate a superscore on the spot?

When you submit the score reports to schools, they would be entered into the computer under your record and linked to your application. It is very easy to pull out any information from the database by the adcom.
