How do credits work?

I know i sound like a noob, but im not really sure how credit hours work in college. Is 3 credits like 3 hours per week? If should i split that up into 2 90 minute classes? These are the classes recommended for me to take fall semester:

Calc 1 (4 cred)
Chem 1 (4 cred)
Chem lab (1 cred)
Intro to mech (1 cred)
composition (3 cred)
arts/humanities (3 cred)

So scheduling-wise should i split the 4 credit classes into 2 2hr. periods? What about the 3 credit classes?

I guess im asking, how would you make your schedule if you had these classes?

I am not sure what you mean by “split up.” Aren’t the classes are already scheduled for you? At best you will have a choice between several sections.

By split up i mean take 90 minutes one day and 90 minutes another day. And i havent scheduled classes yet so im not sure if they just get scheduled for me. How much control do you have over your schedule? I know you get to pick classes but do they assign when your classes are?

You pick which days and times you want to take your classes. When you go schedule your classes there should be certain time periods that you can choose from.

This may not be the process at every school, but generally speaking there’s a list of classes which has what time they’re scheduled for and maybe the location and the professor. Then you choose which classes you want. Credits don’t really come into play in enrollment except for reaching full time status or a unit cap, or if tuition depends on the number of credits.
