How Do Extenuating Circumstances Affect Transfer Admissions?

I've asked this question in another forum, but what to what extent will a college consider extenuating circumstances when making an admissions decision?

I attended a top 20 university, and am attending a local community college now.

I've posted the long version of my personal situation already, but, in short, I am on track for a GPA above a 3.5 after the fall semester, a 3.9 after the spring semester, and an A.S. in mathematics with an honors designation in business. I work and am involved with debate club, economics club, and peer mentoring club.

I have documentation from a therapist and a psychopharmacologist citing these circumstances.

What type of chance do I have? What type of school should I apply to?

Citing what circumstances? You didn’t clarify what the circumstances were.

Sounds like your GPA is rising. That’s always good. I have a feeling that’s not the circumstance you were alluding to though.

It will vary based on the flexibility of the admissions office of each school you apply to. A private liberal arts college would probably allow you to make your case, whereas a large public flagship simply won’t make exceptions for anyone if you’re below a cutoff. That said, if you find the right ally at your destination school, things may just turn out in your favor.

Just read your other thread-

It’s unfortunate, but that’s part of life. I don’t really see what you’re asking. You said your GPA is 3.5, and you can get it up to a 3.9. That’s good enough to get accepted into all kinds of schools. Are you looking for the “overcoming adversity” angle to get accepted? I really don’t think you even need that.

I started out at a top 20 university and was dropped after my first year. I completed my second year at a community college, did ok. Transferred back to my home university, was dropped after a semester. Came home, withdrew from my classes at my local college. Started my summer session at pulled off a 4.0, on track to do well the next two semesters. I’m repeated classes I didn’t do so well in to raise my GPA.

I suffered from PTSD after a car accident before my senior year of high school and was misdiagnosed with anxiety and depression. I tried multiple families of antidepressants that made me suicidal before I was rediagnosed to be bipolar. Sprinkle in the murder if a close family friend and losing another to cancer, it’s been rough.

I’m trying to hace one solid, stable year under my belt before I apply to transfer
